Head Coach: Larry Caudillo

Sophomore centerfielder Angie Rais will also be coun– ted on to anchor the middle of the batting order. The 1989 Toreras will rely heavily on the strong right arm of junior pitcher Lisa Ziomkowski to anchor the pitching staff. The Santee CA native is a two year starter who will look to receive the ball from Caudillo often dur– ing the 1989 season. She will be backed up byWeinsheim and junior Catherine McPhetridge. Freshmen will play a big role for the '89 Toreras. Two San Diego natives - June Andrews (Madison HS) and Pamela Myers(Serra HS)- are expected to step right in to the everyday line-up at shortstop and catcher, res– pectively. Dina Tarr will add depth to the pitching staff as well as challenging for a spot in the outfield.

Caudillo expects the Toreras to be an" interesting team" in 1989. While not offering much in the way of power, he expects the Toreras to be able to score many runs this season. His main concern will be whether his squad will be able to hold down opponents' attacks. If all of the pieces of the puzzle come together, Caudillo sees his team being capable of winning "thirty to thirty-five" games this season. With a schedule that includes doubleheaders with UC Riverside, U.S. International, Loyola Marymount, and Stanford, as well as appearances in the Cal Lutheran and Pioneer(Cal State Hayward) tournaments, the 1989 USD softball team appears ready for the challenges that will face it.

1989 Softball Prospectus

The University of San Diego softball team enters the 1989 season on a note of guarded optimism. Bolstered by the addition of several talented freshmen, the Toreras return their leading hitter and number one pitcher. Whether there are enough "weapons" to be a volatile team in 1989 is the question that head coach Larry Caudillo and his coaching staff will have to answer. Senior first baseman Jeanne Weinsheim returns to lead the Torera offensive attack. The lefthander will be expected to shoulder much of the offensive load.
