USD SOCCER NOTEBOOK STORY LINES THAT WILL SHAPE THE 1995 SEASON... Jara closes in on all-time scoring record As a freshman, he scored 51 points and was named the nation's top frosh player. Three years later, striker Guillermo Jara finds himself 20 points behind USD's all-time leading scorer, Bo Kaemerle, who amassed 131 points over four seasons (1983-86). Jara needs 14 goals to surpass Kaemerle in USO career goals and just 7 assists to pass school– record holder Toby Taitano (1990-93). Competition fierce in the nets With the loss of fifth-year senior Tom Tate, Coach Seamus McFadden will hand over goalkeeping duties to a talented, yet inexperi– enced group. Sophomore Joe Panian appeared in five games as understudy last season. Junior Carlos Castellanos brings size (6'2", 195 lb.) and athleticism. Sophomore class off to strong start Last year, the Toreros received stellar efforts from freshmen Mike Deery, Keith Finnegan, Lafe Vittitoe, Jamie Munro and redshirt Tim Durkin. Munro, singled out as the team's best defen– sive midfielder by McFadden, earned second team AII-WCC honors in 1994. Finnegan, a rug– ged midfielder, and Durkin, earned WCC hon– orable mention status. Deery assisted on five game-winning goals last season while Vittitoe became a valuable reserve, scoring six goals off the bench and finishing third in team scoring. Sporting Green Counting Irish natives Coach McFadden and assistant coach Harry Tweedie, five USO per– sonnel have European ties. Deery (Northern Ire– land) and Finnegan played on Irish National Jun– ior teams. Promising midfielder Leighton O'Brien, who sat out last season due to injuries, was born in Dublin.
Local talent shines USO invited six San Diego County players to camp this season with the expectation that the majority will contribute immediately. Goalkeeper Joe Panian recorded the second highest number of shutouts in national prep his– tory at San Diego High. Carlsbad High alumnus Lafe Vittitoe was named Offensive MVP at the USO/MetLife Challenge last fall. Torrey Pines graduate Jamie Munro started in 14 of 17 games as a freshman. Defender Jimmy Wang, out of Mission Bay High, received WCC Honorable Mention last season. Sophomore redshirt Jon Schoenherr (Hill– top High), and newcomers David Gibbs (Clairemont HS) and Fermin Zubiaur will vye for playing time. Home field to be a familiar site San Diego opens the 1995 campaign with five straight home games in Torero Stadium (due in part to the MetLife and Diadora tourneys) be– fore playing its first road game three weeks into the season. After a stint of four road contests, the Toreros play six of their final nine games at home. WCC and the Far West Poll There are two important aspects of the USO sea– son: How the Toreros fare in the West Coast Con– ference race and where they stand in the Far West Region rankings. The WCC race offers a means for automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament. At-large bids into the NCAA generally go to the top four teams seeded in the Far West Region poll con– ducted by the ISAA (available by calling 510- 528-500 on Tuesdays). McFadden's perseverance pays off When he first began the USO soccer program, McFadden recruited kids out of the domitories. Now in his second decade, McFadden lead USO to the NCAA finals in 1992 and has guided teams into the NCAAs four of the past five seasons.

MetLife Perhaps the biggest highlight of the USO home soccer season, the annual MetLife Challenge draws more fans, media coverage and excitment to Torero Stadium than any other event. THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO The Setting The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education . Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over-looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean (just two miles away). The campus is named Alcala Park and is located 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The Campus The USO campus is one of the most architecturally unique institutions found in the country, featuring 18 major build– ings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Re– naissance style. In the last decade, USO has completed eight major con– struction and expansion projects. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Cen– ter opened, a facility double the size of the former law li– brary that offers the latest in information technology.
Academics USO enrolls 6,400-plus students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and gradu– ate degree programs. The University includes the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 10-30 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 96 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates.
Did You Know? In a report issued by The Chronic!P of Higher Eclucation, USD schol, irship ath– letes ranked third among all West Coast Conference, Paciiic 10 and Big West schools in graduation rates. • USD's Dining Services was awaded first place in the standard menu division ior medium-size schools at the 1 Bth An– nual National Associ,1tion oi College and University Food Services competition. • In 1991, the Library oi Congrl'ss chose USD (one oi only '37 U.S. schools ,111d libraries) to take part in its Anwric,111 Memory Project (AMP). Through the use oi computers and TV monitors, students can call up original source materi,1ls from the Civil War, Continental Congress and other Library oi Congress holdings.
Student Life Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, sym– posia, and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. Over two– thirds of the USO community partakes in intramural sports. Athletics San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. Men's sports include : soccer, baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, golf, football and tennis. Women's sports include: basketball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. In the past two seasons alone, five USO teams have advanced to NCAA Tournaments.
COACHING STAFF
The 42-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the bi g games . Twice the Tore ros hav e marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. Last year, USO shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cab le audience. USO can boast of a .600 winning percentage in NCAA games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he spent several weeks train– ing with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer Leagu e (NASL). Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden passionately rooted for the Irish side in the '94 World Cup but still maintained enough objectivity to serve as a correspondent for USA To– day. A native of Donegal , Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters {Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos.
HARRY TWEEDIE Assistant Coach {5th Season)
SEAMUS MCFADDEN
Head Coach (17th Season)
Assistant Coach Harry Tweedie re– turns for his fifth season at USO. A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Tweedie is a veteran of 16 years play– ing in many of his homeland's top leagues. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 and played collegiate soccer at UCLA. Tweedie has an extensive background in coaching and player development in this country. He was head coach of the San Diego Villa Under 19 team which captured the McGuire Cup as National Champions in 1979 and 1980. He will assist Coach McFadden with practice and game preparations, scouting and player evaluation.
With the recent success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last few years - four NCAA Tournament ap– pearances in five seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. Last yea r, McFadden was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year for a record third time ('94, '92, '86). McFadden arrived at USO in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "...I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will be– come a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writ– ing on the wall many years earlier, when the lrshman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San D iego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local tal– ent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to show– case their talents, were suddenly ar– riving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise un– der their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game.
MARC THIEBACH Assistant Coach {4th Season)
Assistant Coach Marc Thiebach be– gins his fourth season with the Toreros. Thi ebach was a two-year performer at the midfielder's position at USO ('85- '86), graduating with a B.S. degree in International Relations in 1987. He is currently completing work on a Master's degree in Educational Admin– istration. Thiebach received his Class "B" coaching license while in Germany in 1989 and has been active in various club soccer programs in San Diego County. He works with USO goal– keepers as well as being heavily in– volved in scouting future opponents.
