The products are widely used in communication cables, power cables, electronic cables, etc. The annual production capacity will reach 400,000 tons of 8mm copper rod and 100,000 tons of fine copper wire, making up an estimated turnover of over yuan 20 billion per year. The second project makes SAMP even prouder because it represents recognition of the product development and of the important investments in research and development that have taken place since 2009. Following the successful completion of a competitive field test among the world market leaders, SAMP has been reconfirmed to supply the Force Group with four multi-wire drawing lines. These will be added to the existing 11 multi-wire drawing lines and ten bunchers delivered between 2000 and

With the expansion of this mill, POSCO is equipped with a 2.8 million ton annual capacity for the production of wire rods for the manufacture of nails, wires, screws, bolts, nuts, bearings, springs and wire ropes. The new mill will also produce extremely high strength spring steel and high strength wire for deep sea development. THE Asian Development Bank is helping China to build a large-scale concentrated solar thermal power plant, believed to be the first of its kind. “This pioneering project will demonstrate how the PRC could leverage its indigenous solar resources to diversify its energy mix in a sustainable manner. With this comprehensive assistance package of low-cost financing, policy advice, and capacity development, we expect successful demonstration will lead to wider uptake of CSP plants in the PRC in the medium term,” said Shigeru Yamamura, a senior energy specialist at ADB’s East Asia department. The loan will help build a 50MW power plant capable of generating 197 gigawatt-hours of electricity using a renewable energy technology that converts direct normal irradiation into usable heat, generating medium- to high-temperature saturated steam that runs the steam turbine for power generation. Qinghai province, where the plant will be situated, is located in a high plateau and is currently ranked first in solar power capacity concentration throughout the PRC. It has over 2GW of solar photovoltaic installed capacity, which is more than 60 per cent of the national capacity. The project site is located in an area where minimum overnight temperatures can fall to -27ºC. This is the first application of a concentrated solar power plant in such low winter temperatures. The government of the PRC has since announced a target of 1GW of concentrated solar thermal power capacity by 2015 and 3GW by 2020. Joining forces Chinese solar manufacturer Solargiga Energy Holdings Ltd is part of a joint venture to develop 200MW of photovoltaic plants in Ghana. Solargiga said in a statement that the company will own 90 per cent of the venture with Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, which promotes green projects in the north of Ghana. Ghana is following nations such as Nigeria and South Africa in seeking to develop large solar plants. It introduced long-term incentives to help meet a 10 per cent target for generation from clean sources by 2020. The UK developer Blue Energy Co has plans for a 155MW solar park in the country. Metalube expands China operations

LUBRICANTS specialist Metalube has increased its presence in China by appointing Maurice Ngai as general manager. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the lubricants sector to the company, gained from over 15 years with ITW Rocol. China is currently Metalube’s best performing export market. Founded in 2005 it has offices in Shanghai and Dongguan. As part of the restructure, the Chinese operation has considerably bolstered its sales and management team. Also joining are new recruits Dinky Liu as sales manager within the maintenance repair and overhaul unit, and Hubery Huang, sales engineer in the drawing business unit. Ellis cleats heading east to China

EMPEROR cable cleats and ProTect cable straps from UK company Ellis are being installed in the Areva European pressurised reactor (EPR) nuclear power plant currently under construction in the Guangdong province of China. The Taishan nuclear power project, a joint venture between EDF and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, is the third nuclear power station to be built using Areva’s 1,750MW EPR and it is the second time Areva has used Ellis products to secure electrical cables at a nuclear plant. Roland Janssen, vice-president marketing centre wire and cable at Borouge, and Wei Dong, head of SECRI, revealed in their welcoming speeches the importance of HVDC development. HVDC cables have been introduced as a new type of envi- ronment-friendly and energy-saving power cable as they enable efficient power supply over long distances. Wei Dong explained that the HVDC technology is a breakthrough development in efficiently connecting renewable energy to the existing power grids. “China experiences huge development potential as it is currently witnessing a fast economic growth and big demand for electric energy,” said Wei Dong. The Borlink technology is a step-change innovative solution along the wire and cable value chain. It includes a tailor-made and unique high-pressure process for the production of high purity and super clean low-density polyethylene (LDPE) base polymers with superior electrical properties. Borouge and Borealis commit to the increasing global demand for XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) through their current and future investments in Borlink technology. Borouge will be producing 350,000 tonnes of LDPE (low density polyethylene) per year at its new plant being built in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, as part of the Borouge 3 expansion project. ❍ ITER Tokamak (TF coils highlighted in orange)

Ridgway’s contract win RIDGWAY Machines has been awarded a further major contract for the ITER international nuclear fusion reactor project. Placed by Elytt Energy, a European-based innovator in high technology solutions for atomic fusion and new energy sources, this order covers additional tape wrapping head systems to insulate superconductor coils for the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) magnets. Elytt Energy is part of a European Union (EU) consortium, together with ASG Italy and Iberdrola Spain, responsible for the manufacture of ten winding packs for the TF coils. The packs will then be supplied by Fusion for Energy (F4E) who are managing Europe’s contribution to ITER. ITER has been called the largest science experiment in history and aims to demonstrate the technical and scientific feasibility of fusion power for commercial-scale energy. The ITER Tokamak machine will be one of the most complicated machines ever engineered – 30 metres high and weighing 23,000 tons, housing an estimated one million components. The TF magnets produce a magnetic field around the Torus, whose primary function is to confine plasma particles. The coils weigh 6,540 tons; after the vacuum vessel they are the largest ITER components. The ITER organisation was formed to advance the development of hydrogen fusion as an energy source. Fusion is a safe, carbon-free energy source fuelled by abundant resources (heavy hydrogen from sea water) and can produce high levels of power. Partners China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States will implement the project during its estimated ten-year construction and 20-year operational phases. The seven ITER members share every aspect of the project, including science, procurement, finance and staffing, with the aim that ultimately each member will have the know-how to produce its own fusion energy plant. GIVEN the great success of the previous five editions, wire China 2014 will continue to lead the latest trend in China’s wire and cable industry. To protect the NPS spools in future from foreign spools which are not compatible with NPS, Niehoff has protected the system for a long time. In the last few years the Federal Court of Justice has ruled on several decisions that the improper insertion into a foreign series has to be regarded as an anti-competitive practice. From 1 st June 2014 Niehoff will supply original NPS reusable spools with a built-in RFID transponder system – at no extra cost. By means of this transponder NPS users can identify if the spool belongs to the system, either at their incoming goods department or at the Niehoff NPS double spoolers. Moreover, the RFID transponder simplifies spool labelling.

As the spool identification is stored in RFID no label is needed. Niehoff has also applied for industrial property rights protecting this development and expects to receive that protection soon. A five-year warranty for NPS spools equipped with RFID transponders is offered by Niehoff – also free of charge for users. NPS is the world’s only packaging system for automotive cables made of copper, copper alloys and aluminium which allows trouble-free and tangle-free paying-off at highest speeds. The Wire-Temp 6000 is available for product sizes from 0.1 to 10mm and from 0.15 to 100mm. Various communication interfaces are available for the transmission of the measuring values to a Sikora processor system, the line control or a laptop. The photo on the right shows a vertical taping and sintering line for aircraft cables. It consists of Pay-off, 2-Head-Taping- unit with air condition, Capstan, Infrared Sintering Oven and Take-up. (Drawing Machine: photo bottom right, Horizontal Spinning Line: photo above) Especially the vertical oven is a very space saving solution. By using special IR- heaters the power consumption is reduced to a minimum. These very fast reacting heaters allow adjusting the heating power according to the line speed. Lukas is able to provide Taping Lines for wire dimensions from round wire with diameter 0.15mm up to rectangular wire with cross section 100mm². Possible application fields are aerospace cables, high frequency cables, fire resistance cables, wires for generator, motor, transformer and railway applications, etc.

The pressure die-casting is for very rapid production of engineering and other related components even with an intricate design. With its revolutionary concept, it becomes a real dismantable drawing tool adapted to meet all operational requirements. The tool consists of three parts – the steel casing, tungsten carbide pressure die and one part subject to wear (the easily and rapidly replaceable tungsten carbide drawing nib). New lines from S&E

S&E Specialty Polymers LLC has developed two new SEBS product lines, the TufPrene™ 2200 series and the TufPrene™ 2000 series, as alternative solutions for manufacturers seeking a non-PVC alternative. The TufPrene 2200 series is a standard filled SEBS product line in a range of hardnesses from 30 Shore A to 90 Shore A. The TufPrene 2000 series is the unfilled SEBS product line. Both compounds can be colour-matched to specific customer requirements. “S&E has been producing customised SEBS compounds for many years,” said Duane Shooltz, president of S&E Specialty Compounds. “Increased customer demand has led us to develop and add these new TufPrene compounds to our standard product line.” The new lines are TPE compounds that can be moulded or extruded, and they

Ching Chan Optical Technology Co Ltd, a manufacturer of fastener sorting machines for fasteners that recently celebrated its 20 th anniversary, has launched an improved design for its wheel crack inspection system. The CCM wheel crack (also known as head open crack) inspection system is patented in Germany, China and Taiwan, and is capable of inspecting screw head open cracks caused by the wiring process or during the moulding process. Ching Chan says that these types of cracks are not 100 per cent detectable by common top-view or side-view CCD. Ching Chan explains that by applying
