CYCLE TOURING IN SPAIN

GREENWAY CYCLING ROUTE ALONG THE VASCONAVARRO RAILWAY This route offers you a succession of different landscapes across plains and mountains, through tunnels and over spectacular viaducts. Take your pick from three exciting independent itineraries and enjoy all the nature and culture you'll find along your way. Section I has a length of almost 15 km and begins in the Basque city of Vitoria- Gasteiz, the capital of the province of Álava. It goes as far as the mountain pass of Arbalán on the boundary with Guipúzcoa, another Basque province. You'll be cycling through a broad valley of green agricultural lands known as the Llanada Alavesa. Section II is a little over 10 km and also starts off from the capital. It passes through the Llanada Alavesa and the Montes de Vitoria until the Laminoria tunnel, where you'll come to the Estíbaliz shrine, a small Romanesque treasure and a stopping point for pilgrims on the Way of Saint James. Section III is around 40 km long. It starts at the shrine of Santo Toribio and goes as far as Murieta in Navarre. You'll cycle deep into the spectacular landscape of Monte Arboro until you reach Tierra Estella with its remarkable gorge and the magnificent Arquijas viaduct spanning the Ega River. Before you finish your route, take the bike lane to Estella, a lovely Romanesque city on the Way of Saint James.
