Our facility is purpose built, state of the art, and is located at the impressive Lancashire Women and New-born Centre.

Hepato Pancreato Biliary (HPB) Centre We are the regional HPB centre covering the population of Lancashire and South Cumbria. We provide a comprehensive service covering elective and emergency care for patients with surgical and medical problems related to the liver, biliary tree and pancreas. We are also the regional unit managing patients with Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs). Experience is provided in the diagnosis and management of patients with both malignant and benign HPB diseases and includes Endoscopic Ultrasound Scanning (EUS), Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and Radiological interventional procedures such as Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography (PTC), Transarterial Embolisation (TAE) and Microwave Ablation (MWA). There is a weekly Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting held every Friday morning when malignant HPB cases from around the region are discussed and management plans formulated. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the complex nature of HPB pathology and the management of these conditions. There are regular in-patient ward rounds and out-patient clinics throughout the week and there would be an opportunity to join the emergency general surgery on-call team. A wide variety of HPB operations using both minimal access and open techniques are routinely performed including : • Liver resections – segmentectomies and hemihepatectomies are performed using both open and laparoscopic techniques • Biliary resections and reconstructions • Pancreatic resections – pancreatoduodenectomies, Whipple’s procedures, distal pancreatectomies • Surgery for the treatment of acute pancreatitis • Splenectomies Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies – elective and emergency Laparoscopic explorations of the bile duct In addition the scope of surgery performed by the HPB Surgeons encompasses a wide variety of complex gastrointestinal and abdominal wall operations.

We have six neonatal intensive care cots, eight high dependency cots and 20 special care cots resulting in a 34 cot neonatal unit catering for a birth rate of about 6700 deliveries per year.

The unit offers up to date volume guarantee conventional ventilation as well as high frequency oscillation ventilation. The service also offers the modalities of total body cooling and inhaled nitric oxide for the neonatal network and beyond. The unit has onsite facilities for cranial ultrasound and neonatal echocardiography and experience can be gained observing these modalities.

The medical neonatal team is led by six full time non-resident Consultant Neonatologists and two resident consultants who all have various sub-speciality interests.

The service has a strong teaching, audit and research profile as well as a strong governance structure and a focused multidisciplinary team approach. We also work closely with our maternity and obstetrics teams to reduce antenatal and perinatal mortality. We believe in effective team working to achieve the best patient outcomes.

We look forward to sharing our philosophy with you.
