2001 – The Virginia Tech Master Gardener Manual was adapted as the core for the VNLA certification manual 2001 – The Advanced Certification Supplement Manual was completed 2002 - 1st Logo re-design 2004 – Dr. Bonnie Appleton, who developed the Plant ID slide set, put the slides into a PowerPoint presentation and on VHS tapes. 2007 – a high school lesson plan was developed by Louise Roesser, put on CD’s as part of her graduate program with Dr. Bonnie Appleton. These were sent to high schools with horticulture programs 2008 – the Plant ID list was updated 2011 - 1st Chapter re-write – Landscape Design 2015 - 2nd Logo re-design & Plant ID photos were updated and laminated for testing sets 2015 – New Chapter “Conservation Landscaping BMP for Water Quality” was added with the writing being con- tracted out. 2018 – Over 3,100 members have passed the Certification program since its inception and the manual continues to be updated. 1978 – The first certification test was given with 59 members becoming certified 1989 – A Trees, Shrubs and Vines manual was developed with an introductory section on plant characteristics and plant descriptions and a slide set of 173 plants, with 3-5 slides showing habit/landscape uses and close ups of characteristics needed for ID. 1991 - The VNA provided photos from the Plant ID set to Horticopia and received royalties for a number of years.
