говорится в стихотворении «На выставке Карла Вил- линка», посвященном картинам голландского худож- ника (вот она – связь глаза с Голландией), где устра- нение наблюдателя из пейзажа приравнивается к самоубийству художника:

And that‘s, essentially, what the self-portrait is. A step aside from one‘s own body, A stool turned in profile to you, the distant view of life that flew away. So, this is what‘s called «mastery»: The ability not to be terrified by the process of the non-existence - as a form of one‘s own absence, painting it from life.

Что, в сущности, и есть автопортрет. Шаг в сторону от собственного тела, повернутый к вам в профиль табурет, вид издали на жизнь, что пролетела. Вот это и зовется «мастерство»: способность не страшиться процедуры небытия – как формы своего отсутствия, списав его с натуры.

Such an attempt to look at oneself from a distance leads many poets to visions of esoteric and even neu- ro-physiological kind (the best example is Vyacheslav Khodasevich’s “Episode”). In Brodsky, however, that is a kind of exercise in detachment. Art is a painless sub- limation of suicide—a possibility to see the world with- out oneself. The theses of “Report to the Symposium” are so important for Brodsky that he includes them in his Venetian essay almost in their entirety: “The eye is the most autonomous of our organs. It is so because the objects of its attention are inevitably situated on the outside. Except in a mirror, the eye never sees itself.It is the lsat to shot down when the body is fallen asleep. It stays open when the body is stricken with paralysis or dead. The eye keeps registering reality even when there is no apparent reason for doing this, and under all circumstances. The question is: Why? And the an- swer is: Because the environment is hostile. Eyesight is the instrument of adjustment to an environment which remains hostile no matter how well you have adjusted to it. The hostility of the environment grows propor- tionately to the length of your presence in it, and I am speaking not of old age only. Подобная попытка взглянуть на себя со сторо- ны приводит многих поэтов к видениям эзотериче- ского или даже нейрофизиологического толка (луч- ший пример – «Эпизод» В. Ходасевича). У Бродского же это – род интеллектуального упражнения по от- странению. Искусство – сублимация самоубийства, не причиняющая боли. Возможность увидеть мир без себя. Изложенные в стихотворении «Доклад для симпозиума» тезисы настолько важны для Бродско- го, что он почти целиком включает их в своё вене- цианское эссе: «Глаз – наиболее самостоятельный из наших органов. Причина в том, что объекты его внимания неизбежно размещены вовне. Кроме как в зеркале, глаз себя никогда не видит. Он закрыва- ется последним, когда тело засыпает. Он остается открыт, когда тело разбито параличом или мертво. Глаз продолжает следить за реальностью при лю- бых обстоятельствах, даже когда в этом нет нужды.
