This phantasmagoric picture is rooted in the pla- tonic idea of inner light of the eye that, by encountering outer light, gives us the perception of things. Brodsky’s trees are almost like that—except that he gives us a pic- ture that is more vivid, as well as more frightening. The eye sprouts from itself not light, but a trunk and branch- es. From that there is but a step to the independence of the eye that embarks on an autonomous travel in Brod- sky’s texts.
