«Уральский рабочий» как газета, типография-завод, субъект аналитических и художественных усилий ку- раторов, художников и арт-менеджеров – все эти яв- ления объединяет здание Дома печати, места показа основных проектов первой и второй Уральской ин- дустриальной биеннале современного искусства. Ку- раторы первой биеннале Екатерина Деготь, Космин Костинас, Давид Рифф представили место как фабри- ку образов и внесли свою лепту в осмысление обра- за здания, его нового символического смысла в со- временных капиталистических условиях. Куратор основного проекта 2-й биеннале Яра Бубнова вводит образ современности как минного поля, по которому нам помогает идти художник. Дом печати, принимая разные выставки, сталкивается с разными простран- ственными метафорами. Влияют ли они на образ здания, или он раз и навсегда был задан его перво- начальными архитектурой и функцией? Дом печати был построен в Свердловске в то время, когда город был столицей Уральской обла- сти и одним из центров масштабного промышлен- ного строительства в СССР. Как писала газета «Ураль- ский рабочий» в 1933 году, это был «город, созданный заново». The “Uralsky Rabochy” , a newspaper, a printing office- factory, a subject of analytical and artistic efforts on the part of the curators, artists and art-managers—the building of the House of Print, the exhibition venue of the main projects of the 1st and 2nd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, brings together all these phenomena. The curatorial team of the 1st Biennial—Ekaterina Degot, Cosmin Costinas and David Riff—conceived of this site as a place—a factory—that manufactures images and they contributed to the conceptualization of the image of the building and of its new symbolic significance in the context of today’s capitalism. Iara Bubnova, curator of the main project of the 2nd Biennial, introduces the image of contemporaneity as a minefield that an artist helps us probe. The House of Print that hosts various exhibitions engenders different spatial metaphors. Do they have any bearing on the image of the building itself or has its image been determined once and for all by the site’s original architecture and function? The House of Print was erected in Sverdlovsk at the time when the city was the capital of the Ural region and one of the centers of the large-scale industrial construction then underway in the Soviet Union. The “Uralsky Rabochy” [The Ural Worker] newspaper described it in 1933 as “a city created a new”. Although the House of Print remains a prominent feature in the panoramic view of the square of the Paris Commune and determines the outlook of one of the central neighborhoods, its history and architecture are routinely overlooked now. The building is a typical instance of industrial architecture of its time, its facades drawing a clear cut border line between the city on the one hand, and the printing house and the editorial offices of the local newspapers on the other. If publicity and a fine skill of walking the tightrope between the interests of the founding shareholders and those of the society at large are the two things typically expected of the mass media
