If you've ever wondered about the origins of Wonder Woman – the character that is, and her comics – the facts may surprise you. Talk about an interesting story! Polyamorous Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) formed a relationship with former student Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), with the love triangle and its members’ feminist ideals ultimately leading to the creation of Wonder Woman in 1941. The film also looks at the storm of protest over the character, who

After a seven-year break, the serial killer known as Jigsaw is back along with his diabolical death traps and sinister tricycle-riding puppet. It matters not that he died in Saw III and the seventh film was ‘The Final Chapter’– as any horror fan knows, you can’t keep a popular movie maniac down. A new group of strangers find themselves chained up in a barn and are forced to navigate a deadly new game in order to atone for their past sins. It's an MO that points impossibly to the decade-dead Jigsaw killer, aka John Kramer (Tobin Bell). Those familiar with Saw lore will know that Jigsaw

possessed many of the kinkier elements of the trio’s relationship in a time that just wasn’t ready for them. This is a fascinating and insightful biopic, anchored by strong performances and chemistry from the three leads, and full of unexpected insights into the character of Diana. AC

has his acolytes, and the puzzle here is determining who’s really behind the latest wave of slicing and dicing. Jigsaw is not so much a franchise reboot as another sequel content to stick to the rules, although some clever manipulation of the series' timeline will keep viewers guessing. SH

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ( Game of Thrones ) plays a businessman sentenced to ten years in prison for the DUI accident that killed his best friend. With little choice but to join a gang of white supremacists if he wants to survive, the film follows his gradual transformation from white collar everyman into ruthless criminal. Alternating between past and present timelines, this gritty drama is a harsh look at the effects of being institutionalised, and has plenty to say about the state of the US prison system. NCW gives such a committed performance here, you'll forget he's also Jaime Lannister. A good support feature for Brawl in Cell Block 99 . AC

This smart, feel-good indie flick from SNL alumni Dave McCary and Kyle Mooney is best approached with little knowledge of the plot, so try and avoid the spoiler-filled trailer at all costs. Mooney plays a nerdy manchild who has been living in an isolated dome in the desert with his parents for 25 years. His life revolves around watching episodes of a cheesy '80s children's show featuring the eponymous character, which are delivered weekly on videotapes. The truth behind his isolation and the origins of Brigsby Bear make for an ingenious twist that sends the film in an unexpected and inventive new direction. Look out for Mark Hamill, too. AC

Eight years before Jack the Ripper, a ritualistic serial killer dubbed 'The Limehouse Golem' is stalking the shadowy streets of Victorian London, leaving a trail of dismembered bodies and a mystery for Scotland Yard to solve. Assigned to the case is one Inspector Kildare (a severe Bill Nighy), whose list of possible suspects include music hall maestro Dan Leno, novelist George Gissing, and Karl Marx! He must also attempt to save an innocent young woman, accused of her husband's murder, from the gallows. Fans of Penny Dreadful and The Woman in Black are advised to check out this atmospheric period chiller. AC

When you think of movies about golf, chances are Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore spring to mind. Tommy’s Honour offers a more serious account of the sport, swinging back to 19th century Scotland where the open tournament and modern game’s standards were established. 17-year-old prodigy Tommy (Jack Lowden) is determined to challenge the rigid Victorian class system and establish himself as a pro, despite his father’s insistence he become a caddy. If a history lesson on golf doesn't sound too appealing, there's plenty of fiery father/son rivalry and a romantic subplot to raise the dramatic stakes. SH
