Fall 2017 Line Up

Valerie June w/ special guest Nicole Atkins September 22, 2017 Hailed by the New York Times as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents”, in her heart, June is a songwriter first and fore- most, willing and able to blur the lines between genres and eras of sounds. The result is an eclectic blend of folk and soul and country and R&B and blues that is undoubtedly the finest work of her career. After more than a decade as the de facto queen of Asbury Park, Nicole Atkins packed up and moved to Nashville. Her voice recalls a classic vinyl col- lection, untethered to decade or movement or the whim of the hipster elite; an heir to the legacy of “Roy Orbison, Lee Hazelwood, Sinatra, Aretha, Carole King, Candi Staton.”

The Capitol Steps October 18, 2017 Putting the MOCK in Democracy The Capitol Steps began in December, 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that em- ployed them. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they de- cided to dig into the head- lines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a spe- cial brand of satirical humor.

North Misissippi Allstars November 7, 2017 Founded in 1996 by broth- ers Luther (guitar and vo- cals) and Cody Dickinson (drums, piano, synth bass, programming and vocals), the now venerable band are entering their third decade. As ever, their songs pay homage to the country blues legacy while simultaneously pushing it into contempo- rary relevance with fatback funk, electronic innovation, slippery soul, and pure un- adulterated rock ‘n’ roll. **THIS SHOW MAY BE LOUD**

1920s The Lyric moved to 126 North Main Street, immediately adjacent to what was then the Preston Hotel. Towards the end of the 1920s, the three founders of the Lyric--R. Floyd Plank, Vane E. Kelsey, and R.C. Whitsett--decided that, with the advent of “talkies” they needed to build a major new facility that included a top of the line sound system. Space was acquired within a major commercial and apartment complex that was being planned and constructed on College Avenue.

1989–1994 In 1989, the opening of a new multiplex in town combined with the changing nature of film distribution and advent of home videos forced the theatre to close its doors. 2013 For several years, the film industry had been transitioning from 35mm print film to digital cinema. It was essential that The Lyric make this transition if they were going to continue to show current films. Through the support of a community fund raising effort, the theatre was able to install a state-of-the-art 4K digital projector in the summer of 2013.

2006 The facade of The Lyric was not part of the 1996-1998 renovation. This project was undertaken in 2006. Lester Properties repaired the crumbling facade wall and the Lyric Council replaced the original masks that adorned the theatre’s parapet from 1930 until sometime in the 1950s. The original masks had been deemed a hazard to passers-by. The replicas, designed and built by Vivian Appler, were unveiled and installed after the 75th anniversary celebration.
