Joan and Hilda wrote several chapters in the book that Joan co-edited remembered most. She was a great teacher, a lot of fun and also very brave, not letting her illness get in the way of her work which she continued until the very end. She taught us a great deal, not only about dysphagia, but also For those of us who knew her best, it was her unfailing kindness, enthusiasm for life, and true humility and unflagging efforts to continue improving the assessment and treatment of dysphagia for which Joan will be

Georgia Malandraki is an associate professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University. Georgia had the honor to start working with Joan at Teachers College, Columbia University, and was inspired to partially shift her primary research focus from adult dysphagia to children with cerebral palsy and developmental disability, largely because of Joan’s contagious love, passion, and dedication to this group. In the short time the two worked together, they co-mentored more than 20 graduate students, published extensively, co-taught courses, and most importantly formed a deep, heartfelt, and everlasting bond of friendship. about acceptance and optimism.
