WEST COAST CONFERENCE SOCCER

Once again the West Coast Conference proved its dominance on a national scale this past season with four teams qualifying for NCAA Tournament action , and Portland claiming the national title behind the strong play of NCAA Player of the Year Christine Sinclair. Needless to say, the WCC is regarded as one of the premiere soccer conferences in the United States. League members San Diego, Pepperdine , Saint Mary's, Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount have all received invitations to the NCAA College Cup Tournament in recent years San Diego has made it into the NCAA Tournament in six of the past seven seasons. This past season the WCC again saw sucess in the Tournamernt with Pepperdine , Santa Clara and Portland all advancing into the sweet sixteen and Gonzaga made its inagural appeearence into the field of 64 , losing in the first round 1-0 to USC. The WCC is proud to enter its 15th season of women 's soccer. Historically, four member teams have tasted post-season play, with Santa Clara leading the way with 16 appearances, including 11 NCAA semi-finals. Portland follows with 12 trips, including eight appearances in the NCAA Semi-Finals and the College Cup Title this past season , its second national crown in the past four seasons . The Pilots also advanced to the Finals in 1995. The University of San Diego has appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven times, aiming for their seventh trip in the past eight years in 2006 . Saint Mary's has qualified for the tournament three times, most recently advancing to the second round in 2001 . Women 's soccer is one of 13 sports the 53-year-old conference sponsors. Started in 1952 as a men's basketball league for five Bay Area schools, the wee added women 's athletics to its lineup in 1985. All wee members are private institutions with high academic standards and growing athletic tradition .
