The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters: The Tragic and Glamourous Lives of Jackie and Lee

S AM K A S HN E R & NAN C Y S C HO E N B E RG E R

A poignant, evocative, and wonderfully gossipy account of the two sisters who represented style and class above all else — Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill When sixty-four-year-old Jackie Kennedy Onassis died, her younger sister Lee wept inconsolably. Then Jackie’s thirty-eight-page will was read. Lee discovered that substantial cash bequests were left to family members, friends, and employees — but nothing to her. ‘I have made no provision in this my will for my sister, Lee B. Radziwill, for whom I have great affection, because I have already done so during my lifetime,’ read Jackie’s final testament. In life, Jackie and Lee were alike in so many ways. Both women had a keen eye for beauty — in fashion, design, painting, music, dance, sculpture, poetry — and both were talented artists. One would grow to become the most iconic woman of her time, while the other lived in her shadow. As they grew up, the two sisters developed an extremely close relationship threaded with rivalry, jealousy and competition. For the first time, Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner and acclaimed biographer Nancy Schoenberger tell the complete story of these larger-than-life sisters. Drawing on new information and extensive interviews with Lee, this dual biography sheds light on the public and private lives of two extraordinary women who lived through immense tragedy in enormous glamour.

THE STORY BEHIND RUGBY LEAGUE’S GREATEST PLAYER, IN HIS OWN WORDS

Johnathan Thurston is widely regarded as the best rugby league player in the world — and arguably the greatest to ever play the game. Now, for the first time, award-winning journalist and author James Phelps reveals the story behind the legend. Thurston’s autobiography — written with News Corp journalist and long-time friend James Phelps — will follow Thurston’s journey from a Brisbane kid who was written off as too skinny, too slow and too wild to play professionally, to his debut with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2003, to State of Origin star, through the fairy tale premierships, and on to Dally M and Clive Churchill Medal winner. ‘My story started in the backyard of a housing commission house in Sunnybank Hills. All these years later and despite my achievements, I am still blown away and completely humbled that people want to read my story. I’m honoured to have partnered with HarperCollins on this project and really hope everyone enjoys reading about my journey,’ Thurston says. On writing the book with Thurston, Phelps says, ‘I thought I knew everything about this Australian sporting legend. I didn’t. No one does. But soon they will. J.T. gave me access to all his personal files for the project and all the knockbacks, contracts and deals will be laid bare for the first time. He opens up on the setbacks and scandals. On the agony and pain. On love and hate — and on the time he almost walked away from rugby league. But this story doesn’t begin with medals and trophies, it begins in a Brisbane backyard; with a boy, a ball and a bloody big dream.’

ANZAC Sniper RO L AND P E R RY

The extraordinary story of Stan Savige, Gallipoli marksman, Pacific War general and the founder of Legacy The son of a country butcher, Stan Savige left school at twelve to become a blacksmith’s striker. But in 1915, a passage in the bible inspired the devout Scout leader and Sunday school teacher to enlist. Soon his abilities as a crack marksman attracted the attention of the officers and he was put in charge of Sniper Ridge — his job to eliminate the enemy assassins in Anzac Cove. Savige succeeded and survived Gallipoli, only to be sent to the Western Front then Persia as part of the crack squad Dunsterforce. It was the beginning of a long, dangerous and distinguished military career spanning both world wars. In this gripping biography, Roland Perry paints a fascinating and complex portrait of Lieutenant General Sir Stanley George Savige, a man of character and compassion, a quiet outsider who founded the war veterans’ support charity Legacy, who still has few peers in courage, skill and achievement and whose record is second to none in Australian military history, in the scope of his combat over two world wars. Roland Perry is one of Australia’s best-known authors. He has written 28 books, including Monash and Chauvel , Celeste , Horrie the War Dog , Bill the Bastard , The Queen, Her Lover, and the Most Notorious Spy in History , Bradman’s Invincibles , The Changi Brownlow , The Australian Light Horse and Monash: The Outsider Who Won a War . The little boat with a big past: the fight to save one of the most important artefacts of Australian military history Down at the wharves of Sydney’s Darling Harbour, an unassuming black timber fishing boat bobs in the water outside the Australian National Maritime Museum. But appearances can be deceiving. MV Krait, as the old trawler is known, played a key role in one of World War II’s most audacious and successful commando raids. The Krait is the most successful Australian ‘warship’ of WWII. In September 1943, thirteen young Z Special Unit operatives sailed the small fishing boat from Australia to Japanese-occupied Singapore to make a daring raid that destroyed 40,000 tonnes of enemy shipping. Operation Jaywick rates as one of the greatest Special Forces operations of all time. The Mighty Krait weaves together the story of Operation Jaywick with the new story of the efforts being made to save the vulnerable little vessel and display it as a permanent memorial to Australian Special Forces. Ian McPhedran is an award-winning journalist and the author of several bestselling books, including The Amazing SAS and Too Bold to Die . Until 2016 he was the national defence writer for News Corp Australia. In 1993, he won a United Nations Association Peace Media Award and in 1999 he won a Walkley Award for his exposé of the Navy’s Collins Class Submarine fiasco. Ian lives in Sydney. Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy: 1945–1975 MA X H A S T I NG S

From the bestselling author of All Hell Let Loose comes a masterful chronicle of one of the most devastating international conflicts of the 20th century Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of a monumental struggle. Many writers treat the war as a US tragedy, yet Hastings sees it as overwhelmingly that of the Vietnamese people, of whom forty died for every American. US blunders and atrocities were matched by those committed by their enemies. No past volume has blended a political and military narrative of the entire conflict with heart-stopping personal experiences, in the fashion that Max Hastings’ readers know so well. The author suggests that neither side deserved to win this struggle, with so many lessons for the 21st century about the misuse of military might to confront intractable political and cultural challenges. He marshals testimony from warlords and peasants, statesmen and soldiers, to create an extraordinary record.

A WITTY, RAZOR-SHARP NOVEL SET IN THE WORLD OF PUBLISHING, WRITTEN BY THE ULTIMATE INDUSTRY INSIDER

Amy Winston is a hard-drinking, bed-hopping, hot-shot young editor on a downward spiral. Having made her name and fortune by turning an average thriller writer into a brand superstar, Amy is given the unenviable task of steering literary great Helen Owen back to publication. When Amy knocks on the door of Helen’s beautiful townhouse in north-west London, Helen and her novelist husband, Malcolm, are conducting a silent war of attrition. The townhouse has been paid for with the enormous seven-figure advance Helen received for the novel she wrote to end fifty years of making ends meet on the stale crusts of critical acclaim alone. The novel Malcolm thinks unworthy of her. The novel Helen has yet to deliver. The novel Amy has come to collect. Amy has an ultimatum for Helen: sell out or face ruin. In The Girl on the Page , John Purcell draws on his experience in the industry to deliver a literary page-turner which asks searching questions about the intersection of art and commerce and the often-discordant relationship between integrity and ambition — especially when greed and betrayal are in the mix. Ultimately, The Girl on the Page is about the redemptive power of great literature — and the potentially disastrous consequences if we seek to compromise that greatness.

Now she is America’s most wanted, and the organisation is closing in on her beloved five-year-old son, whom she sent into protective hiding with her dearest friends. Faced with insurmountable odds, but armed with a mother’s love for her son, Jane will stop at nothing to save him. But even if she can get to him in time, there’s still the risk that the forbidden door will be opened and an unimaginable terror unleashed. Jane’s courage, wits, discipline and skill will be tested as never before, as she searches for a way through an ever-contracting labyrinth of terror. ‘Readers will clamour for more tales involving Hawk and her quest for justice.
