Crisis Response - Helicopters

North Sea Memorial Garden Refurbishment

Oil & Gas UK assisted in the co-ordination of the industry response to the Sumburgh fatal helicopter accident in August. Renewed Focus on Maximising Recovery of UKCS Oil and Gas Resource New work groups have been formed to refocus attention on maximising the recovery of oil and gas from the UKCS. These include: The PILOT North Sea Rejuvenation Work Groups to promote greater collaboration around critical hubs in the Northern North Sea and the Central North Sea The Exploration Taskforce to stimulate more exploration activity The Technology Steering Group to develop a technology strategy for the UKCS

Oil & Gas UK spearheaded fundraising for the refurbishment of the North Sea Memorial Garden in Hazlehead Park, Aberdeen. In total, Oil & Gas UK members raised £140,000 of the £150,000 needed for the comprehensive replanting of the rose garden in time for the 25th Anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster on 6 July. Around 1,000 people attended the anniversary ceremony in the garden. This included many relatives and friends of the men who lost their lives, the First Minister, the Rt Hon Alex Salmond MSP, and the Secretary of State for Scotland, the Rt Hon Michael Moore MP. Oil & Gas UK ran a pilot communications campaign to highlight the sector’s contribution to job creation, economic growth, innovation and technology. The campaign recruited over 1,000 supporters; distributed 60 information packs to companies; held over a dozen road shows; and published around 30 individual case studies to highlight the campaign’s key messages. The programme concluded with a public debate examining the role of business innovation in the economy, with the Business Secretary, the Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable amongst the speakers. Evaluation of the campaign showed that it is possible to shift the public’s perceptions of the industry, provided it is consistent in its communications with the wider audience around the topics that matter to them – jobs, local economic opportunity, technological innovation and enterprise.
