The Accessory Dream Guide Issue 5

KIM THOMAS CALGARY, AB

We never know what forces are at work to bring change into our lives. In Kim Thomas’ case, it was the worst possible tragedy for any mother that eventually transformed her into the community leader she is today. In December, 2012, Kim’s 17-year-old son Brandon was killed by a drunk driver. Kim tells her story: “After a couple years of being unable to function, I slowly had to pull myself up and do something or I would not have been able to survive. The perfect event to honor and remember Brandon, and to raise awareness about the way he was killed was a Show ‘N Shine. That first year, I met and talked with everyone and the acceptance was amazing, even overwhelming. Every year after that, I met more amazing people. I witnessed the friendship, the respect and the unity of the community as a whole. I smile when I remember being told that I was like the Mom of the auto community.”

“I would never have thought of myself as a community leader and I suppose that is because the things we do we don’t do alone. My daughter, Kayla, is a huge part of everything we do and she as well as so many others stand beside me, grounding me when I need it and lifting me up when I need that. Without so many amazing people and companies, we could not even hope to suc- ceed. They are my heroes and they are the leaders. I am humbled, honoured, touched, surprised, and grateful to have been nominated and chosen. I do not help to organize any events other than Show Your Ride for Brandon. However, because of the experience I have gained in organizing and hosting our event, I have helped and answered many questions from others who also are wanting to start events. I am always willing to guide them.”

Kim’s advice to group and event leaders is straight forward: “Be patient, ask for help when you need it. There are so many wonderful people who are there, wanting to help you. Be clear in what your goals are and stay true to those goals no matter what others think or say. Surround yourself with those who help lift you up and who will stand by your side, they are the people who are important.”
