Source: EV Volumes; BEV a PHEV In terms of EV sales by brand, BYD had a signi cant lead over Tesla in 2023. BYD sales were nearly 2.9 million units, whereas Tesla sales were 1.8 million units. BMW came in third place with 2023 EV sales totalling 500,000 units. Although Toyota is the biggest player globally in terms of passenger car sales, it is on the opposite side of the rankings when it comes to EV statistics. is is because the statistics consider pure battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
