year-on-year increase. ese positive gures were helped by increased production, aided by the gradual easing of supply chain problems. In the case of total exports of motor vehicles, the value reached € 195.13 billion (1.15% of GDP), representing a 14% increase compared to 2022. On the import side, the value of imported passenger cars totalled € 78.4 billion in 2023. is import volume represented an increase of almost 27%. e trade balance remained positive, with its value increasing by 2.6% year-on-year to a total of €98.2 billion. ese gures con rm the importance of the automotive industry for the trade balance of the European Union, which in 2023 showed not only export growth but also a positive development of the trade balance, thus maintaining its role as a key

Source: European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), Eurostat As a result of the coronavirus crisis, imports of passenger cars into the European Union fell signi cantly by around one third between 2019 and 2020. EU exports of passenger cars fell by almost 16% over the same period, bringing the total number of vehicles to 5.19 million. Taking all motor vehicles into account, ex-exports from the EU amounted to 5.8 million units, representing a year-on-year decline of 17%. e situation had already recovered and improved in 2021, with a 1.3% year-on year increase in passenger car imports into the EU, bringing the total to 3.1 million units. In 2023, the trend continued, with 3.85 million passenger cars imported into the EU. Total motor vehicle imports in 2023 recorded a 15.8% year-on-year increase, representing a total of 4.24 million vehicles.
