Source: ACEA, Eurostat In 2023, passenger car exports from the European Union reached a total value of €176.6 billion. e United States was the largest customer, accounting for roughly one- fth of total passenger car exports with a value of €40.3 billion. e second most important market was the United Kingdom with €31.2 billion followed by China, which (as with the number of cars exported) saw a year-on-year decline of 20% to €19.3 billion. China also managed to signi cantly strengthen its position on the European market year-on-year. While the EU imported 170 thousand passenger cars from China in 2020, this number has risen signi cantly, in 2023 (by almost 40% year-on-year), putting China ahead of long-time leader Turkey. e improving economic situation in the European Union and rising purchasing power have also been re ected in EU passenger car imports. Virtually all major importers have seen double-digit growth, except South Korea, where growth in imported passenger cars was „only“ 5% compared to 2022. e share of key importers suggests that the market for passenger car imports into the EU is diverse and includes several major players. Increasing imports from China, which is gradually gaining a stronger position, are indicative of changing trade relations and of the growing competitiveness of Chinese cars in the European market.
