2.3 The EU on the road to electromobility In 2023, while pure electric passenger cars (BEVs) boosted sales with a nearly 15% share of new registrations, petrol cars continued to dominate the market with a market share of 35.3%, and hybrid-electric cars came in second with a share of 25.8%. However, pure electric cars did claim one small victory by surpassing diesel cars for the rst time, whose share remained stable at 13.6%. e data for sales of new battery electric cars in December 2023 was interesting, as they fell by 16.9% to 161,000 units compared to December of the previous year. In addition to the high comparative base of December 2022, this decline was also due to a signi cant drop in the key German market, down 47.6% year-on-year. is was mainly due to the removal of subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles. Despite this, total annual sales of battery electric vehicles climbed above 1.5 million units in 2023, representing a signi cant 37% growth compared to 2022. As a result, battery electric vehicles accounted for a market share of 14.6% in 2023. On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market witnessed a declining trend during 2023. Compared to 2022, there was a 7% decline in sales, bringing their market share down to 7.7%. is re ects the shift in preference towards pure battery EVs and the overall trend of gradually decreasing interest in plug-in hybrid technology.
