In this issue, Pradman Kaul talks about the company’s global objective to close the digital divide and the many ways that “getting smarter” feeds innovation. The Internet is no longer a luxury, but rather the glue connecting everyone on Earth. In this issue we talk extensively about the many ways that connectivity is a basic service for many, just like electricity and water. Can you talk about the Hughes mission to close the digital divide, especially in areas such as Brazil and Colombia? Closing the digital divide is a global objective for Hughes. Strategically, with HughesNet ® , we are now expanding successfully beyond North America—where we are market leaders in high-speed satellite Internet service with over 1 million subscribers—and since the launch in Brazil in late 2016 is already exceeding our expectations; with HughesNet in Colombia now launched, we anticipate reaching a majority of the country’s population. As both technology and service providers, we are delivering these services utilizing our award-winning JUPITER™ System operating over high-throughput EchoStar XVII and XIX Ka-band satellites in North America, and

Telesat’s 65W satellite in South America. Globally, we are enabling a growing family of operators who are deploying JUPITER Systems to deliver broadband services in countries on four continents. And as reported by COMSYS, our leading market share in total VSATs continues to exceed 50 percent, with over 6 million terminals shipped to customers in more than 100 countries. In September, Hughes won the Most Innovative Satellite Application/Innovation at VSAT 2017. Can you talk about the significance of that award and what it represents for Hughes? We always appreciate having our work recognized and are proud of the fact that HughesNet Gen5 service is being acknowl- edged as an important initiative impacting the industry and improving global connec- tivity. Indeed, it’s a testament to our overall strategy, which is to pursue a “virtuous” cycle of growth, namely: Innovation of technology and products enables delivery of services, which through our customers’ experience creates opportunities to innovate new products and applications—as well as to lower product costs through growing volume of production, which further fuels demand—and the cycle grows. This strategy has worked well for us
