END OF UNIT COMPETENCIES WITH LANGUAGE EXPECTATIONS

By the end of Unit 3, students will be able to: ● graph various functions using properties of transformations

● use the transformations performed on the parent function to write an equation ● recognize properties of even and odd functions using correct math vocabulary such as: ○ exponent, symmetric, end behavior, even, odd, leading coeffcient ● fnd the key features of polynomial functions in different representations using correct math vocabulary such as: ○ Domain, range, x-intercept, y-intercept, end behavior ● use various methods to fnd the roots of polynomials ● understand that polynomials are closed under addition, subtraction, and multiplication ● add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials SCAFFOLDING IN ACTION

● Lesson 3.1: Jump start - have students use colored pencils to mark the differences in the fgures, Launch - Notice and Wonder, use colored pencils to mark the differences in the fgures ● Lesson 3.2: Jump start - provide larger grids with the axis already labeled, Launch - provide graphic organizer with table and grid and a list of key features to fnd, Explore - provide larger grids with axis already labeled ● Lesson 3.3: Launch - provide manipulatives for operations on the polynomials, Explore - provide algebra tiles for help with operations on the polynomials, Discuss - Think-Pair-Share ● Lesson 3.4: Launch - Think-Pair-Share, Explore - chunk the task by checking in with students every few minutes to give feedback ● Lesson 3.5: Launch - think aloud modeling long division, Explore - offer choice: everyone does 5b, then pick from 5a, 5c, or 5d ● Lesson 3.6: Launch - do #1 whole class, students complete #2 & #3 individually ● Lesson 3.7: Jump start - Which One Doesn’t Belong?

Skill Building

Priority Lessons

● Lesson 3.8: Explore - provide explicit steps for dividing polynomials ● Lesson 3.9: Explore - chunk the task and discuss after each section ● Lesson 3.10: Explore - chunk the task: discuss after every 2 problems
