Mary has completed Lean 1, Lean 2 and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Lean Projects as an Experiential Learning Tool Natalie Cherbaka & Lean Project Teams, Virginia Tech Student teams will present real-world Lean tool applications. You’ll be introduced to experiential learning, explore Lean projects and evaluate Lean metrics and project results. A Journey of Lean in the Utility Industry Tony Miller, Appalachian Power Co. (APCo) Review APCo’s six-year journey engaging front line employees and moving the culture in a positive direction. Examples will be given of standard work developed within teams and specifics of that within the electric industry. Tony is the continuous improvement manager for APCo with over 32 years in the industry. He has experience in implementing Lean management systems. Natalie is the Collegiate Associate Professor for Virginia Tech’s Industrial & Systems Engineering.

Tom Zbell Tom has been a project manager at Genedge for 19 years. He spent 25 years implementing Lean concepts in various industries around the Commonwealth. He has a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering, a Masters in Organizational Management and over 40 years’ experience in various industries.

James Smith James is a Regional Growth

Manager for GENEDGE, the Virginia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). He has a background in Manufacturing/Electronics and Business Administration. He has experience in product design engineering, quality assurance, sales, workforce and enterprise growth services. He is trained in Lean and Six Sigma.

Learn about the triumphs and challenges while building a flow of daily performance management and kaizen activities. Chris is the Site Lead and Head of Operations for Novozymes Salem. Value StreamMapping Administrative & Office Processes Urs Buehlmann, Virginia Tech The average industry participant struggles to keep up with all the Lean buzzwords, to separate the odd from the helpful, and to fully grasp their significance. We’ll discuss some of the more helpful systems and illustrate their workings. Urs is faculty at the Virginia Tech Department of Sustainable Biomaterials. Mark Oakes, Merit Medical Value stream mapping of an administrative process is different from a manufacturing process. This session will highlight those differences and provide a foundation for mapping these processes that move paper or electronic documents through multiple hands, reviews and approvals. Mark is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He is the Manufacturing Manager for Merit Medical.

John Dyer John, president of Process Innovations, Inc., has over 32 years experience helping organizations achieve their improvement goals. Dyer started his career with General Electric and then went to Ingersoll-Rand before starting his own consulting company. He is also a Contributing Editor for IndustryWeek magazine, a periodical focused on helping organizations achieve their improvement goals. He is a judge for an annual competition that recognizes the best performing operations in North America. He is an author of a book on leadership set to publish in April 2019. John has an electrical engineering degree from Tennessee Tech University, as well as an international Master’s of Business from Purdue University and the University of Rouen in France. Why is your organization doing Lean, Six Sigma or any other improvement effort? Join John Dyer as we take a dive into the portions of the improvement process that are often misunderstood or completely overlooked: direction and culture. There are four components that will help clarify the direction and put into words a description of your culture. Margaret has over 20 years experience as a Lean practitioner and teaches courses at Virginia Tech on Lean and leadership. Revitalizing Continuous Improvement Examples of Lean in Business Cynthia Popernack & Lynn Miller, Canon Learn about Canon Virginia’s system for reviving their lean culture: a three-part approach that includes a cross-functional planning team, a training methodology and gemba events. Cynthia and Lyn are both Industrial Engineers with Canon Virginia, Inc. Kaizen in Action! (in Local Government) Chad Sweeney & Jessica Webb, Roanoke County Learn about the Kaizen concept and see first- hand how two local government processes were improved with a two-day Kaizen event. Chad is the Enterprise Servies Manager for Roanoke County’s Information Technology and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Jessica is the Administrative Services Coordinator for Roanoke County’s Department of Social Services and is a Certified Lean Practitioner through Virginia Tech.
