Round Up Spring 2019

How we can help In addition to our 12 month the following online services

CPD and the IDD

If you’re involved in the distribution of insurance products, you must complete a minimum of 15 hours of CPD in relation to your activities in this area. These 15 hours are not in addition to the standard requirement of 35 hours (of which 21 must be structured) that apply to most IFAs. Neither is there a requirement for these 15 hours to be structured. This year, we’ve received lots of requests for protection related learning (hopefully not just to help meet this requirement). This is an activity many people are involved in, and will support meeting your IDD CPD requirements. But don’t forget that there are many other insurance based products (for example, savings plans, investment bonds, and some contract based pensions, such as personal pensions). Relevant CPD in relation to these products will also count towards your minimum 15 hours IDD requirement. If you also advise on retail investments, there’s likely to be some overlap, as some of the 15 hours required may also relate to retail investment products, where you already have a requirement to complete 35 hours of CPD. For example, if you attend a seminar where the taxation of investment bonds is on the agenda, that session would provide you with CPD that meets both the RDR and IDD requirements. Similarly a session on trusts, that can be applied to investment bonds or protection plans, would meet both requirements. You must, however, establish that the learning you have undertaken is appropriate, based on the products you recommend and/or the products your clients hold. Whilst your learning doesn’t need to be product based, you must be able to apply it to an insurance based product and it must be relevant. This should then be documented in your reflective statement. To help you keep a track of your IDD related learning, we’ve added new functions to the threesixty CPD tool which now allows you to keep a track of your IDD CPD hours, in addition to that of your overall CPD.

New! Remote learning

We’ve replaced the old e-Learning tests, within our online test tool, with a new and intuative, remote learning facility. Remote learning courses include reading and visual learning aids to be studied prior to completing a ten question test. Completion of each activity earns up to sixty minutes of structured CPD. CPD certificates are provided upon completion. New courses will be added each month to support your ongoing CPD. Activities released in the first quarter of the year include SM&CR, protection activities and financial crime. You can access the ‘remote learning’ facility from within the online test tool. Our CPD recording tool helps you to keep track of your continuing professional development and is compatible with the main accredited bodies to support your SPS requirements. You can record all of your structured and unstructured activities, documenting learning objectives, reflective statements and keeping track of any activity that also supports IDD requirements. Evidence of your learning can be uploaded securely and in some cases, for example upon completion of a threesixty remote learning course, this will be done automatically. If you supervise staff, you can request access to monitor and assign your teams CPD activities, giving you full oversight of their progress.
