Laser sensors for a wide range of applications Cersa-MCI, France, specialises in the design and development of optical metrology such as laser diffraction sensor (LDS series) for fine wire diameter measurement, laser projection sensor (LPS series) mainly for the cable industry, as well as laser interferometric sensors (LIS series) suitable for the fibre optic industry. In order to meet increasing demand for in- line defect detection of wires, optical fibres and cables, the company has developed SQM – Surface Quality Measurement – using the latest optic and electronic technologies. The company claims that SQM pays for itself quickly, by improving production efficiency and restoring quality reputations for producers. Two different principles are used according to the applications: SQM Fine (from 0.05mm to 2mm) checks 64 dots minimum per circumference with 330,000 circumferences per second, and is aimed at application on fast lines such as optical fibre, fine wires, and micro tube. SQM Large includes three models covering 0.5mm to 80mm diameters, and offering 3,000 dots at 20kHz per range circumference for extrusion applications.

Features of the instrument line include adjustable defect detection thresholds for shape, surface and frequency; temperature compensation; serial link RS 232C/RS485; network connections; wire length pulse count and speed computing; statistical functions for defect size, frequency and density; and static relay outputs for alarm. The company’s solutions for wire and cable diameter measurement include measurement by Laser Diffraction Sensor New (LDSN) from 5 to 2000µm (0.2 to 80 mils), featuring stability and repeatability within 0.03% of the diameter. Options include wire rotation, label printer, standard wires, portable units, and oscillating support. Cersa also offers a portfolio of high- performance laser interferometric measuring instruments that ensure full fibre qualification and certification on the draw towers. These instruments are suitable for use with telecommunication fibres, special fibres, GGP, and single coating layer.

Evolution from Reelex Reelex Packaging Solutions – formerly known as Windings Inc – is busy with more than just a new name. The Reelex® package, an industry standard in the communications cable market, is evolving to address the needs and requirements of a broad spectrum of products that are traditionally packaged on reels. The size of the products packaged in Reelex coils now includes products with diameters as small as 0.025" or as large as 0.625" outside diameter. The resulting coils range in diameter from 1.5 inches to more than three feet. Manufacturers and installers of com- munications cable have known the benefits of the Reelex package for more than 30 years. By expanding the scale of coil winding equipment, Reelex has brought these same benefits to products that were not previously available. Reelex Packaging Solutions Inc – USA Fax : +1 845 8787884
