The processes under review here richly deserve the designation of specialities. Beginning with a sublimely simple form, a strand of wire, they work it together with other strands to produce some of the most intricate shapes known. The combination of simplicity and elaboration – the transformation of frailty into strength and utility – is perhaps unique in industrial practice.
