Two Pieces

Unconcerned byour being centre stage, we slept in strictopposition to the outside world, and invited the darkness to draw the day to its close. In an age of industrial and media revolutions, we found ourselves obsolete. Scandalously inefficient, inertia was our way of reclaiming our right to gaze up at the stars with our eyes closed. All our parallel lives, the ones we’d postponed, rejected, or thought impossible, came to pass that night. Our story had come to an end, and sleep was the final frontier.

The world kept on going without us.

No longer relevant, we remained vaguely human in an inhuman world, side by side, disconnected from the matrix.

For one more dawn, we were immortal.

Darkness came searching for us, took us both by surprise.

Just as it should have.

Your hand turned cold.

Your face turned pale.

I waited for the sun to rise, though of course it hasn’t really risen ever since it was discovered that the earth rotates. TherearenorealdifferencesbetweenNewtonandHomer, I thought, just different stopping points between passing daydreams. We’re still searching for the exact origin of reason, ignoring the fact that logic can never free us of pain. 61
