Undersea fiber cable announced Vodafone New Zealand has signed a long term capacity deal with Pacific Fibre, over its plan to build a 12,750km multi-million dollar international submarine cable. The undersea cable system will initially connect Australia to New Zealand, then to the USA, and is scheduled to be launched by early 2014. Under the 10-year deal, Vodafone will become Pacific Fibre’s biggest New Zealand customer.

Pacific Fibre’s co-founder Sir Stephen Tindall is welcoming Vodafone on board with the project which, he says, “ ...effectively parks New Zealand, in my opinion, just off the Californian coast. It gives small operators who want to get started the ability to get in on super-fast broadband connectivity with the United States.” The cable is scheduled to be launched in 2014 and investors are currently being sought to fund the construction.
