Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron seldom give reasons to talk about themselves, but once it happens, talks and applauses last for several years: De Young Museum is some- thing that is still fresh in memory of the fans, and all of a sudden two projects come up, and each of those is worth the closest attention. While the Beijing wonder is still being under construction, another appearance Herzog & de Meuron has taken place in the Spanish cap- ital, where CaizaForum, a centre for new cul- tural initiatives, opened. Without any false modesty the architects themselves call their building a magnet both for amateurs and con- noisseurs of art and simple town-dwellers and visitors. Leaving aside architectural pilgrims who may be collecting visits to buildings de- signed by outstanding contemporary archi- tects, we can guess that this visionary – in the positive sense – project will attract attention of the most mixed audience, since the archi- tects provide the viewer with enough things to «stare at» by their meticulous attention to details. Well, and they provide enough for the connoisseurs of architecture to think about, which is equally important.

В преддверии открытия пекинского стадиона, спроектированного бюро Herzog & de Meuron, никто не ожидал ничего особенного, по- тому что архитекторы выдают по блистательному проекту раз года в три. Жак Херцог и Пьер де Мюрон заставляют говорить о себе редко, но уж так, чтобы разговоры и восторги не стихали лет несколько: еще свеж, в общем–то, в памяти поклонников De Young Museum, а тут не- ожиданно целых два проекта, каждый из которых достоин самого при- стального внимания. Пока достраивается пекинское чудо, еще одно явление Herzog & de Meuron народу произошло в испанской столице, где открылся CaixaForum, – здание новых культурных инициатив. Без лишней скромности архитекторы и сами называют постройку «магни- том» не только для любителей и ценителей искусства, но и для про- стых горожан и приезжих. Оставив в стороне архитектурных паломни- ков, которые, может быть, коллекционируют осмотры зданий великих архитекторов современности, легко предположить, что этот визионер- ский в хорошем смысле слова проект привлечет внимание самой раз- ношерстной публики, поскольку своим вниманием к деталям архитек-
