изъясняется, быстро подбирая нужные и точ- ные слова. Искусство занимает главное место в жиз- ни художника. Это естественно и само собой разумеющийся факт. Однако личность Кинга привлекла мой интерес еще и потому, что он живет двумя жизнями. Его мирская профес- сия – геммология, наука о драгоценных кам- нях. Кормящее его искусство дело Кинг вы- брал случайно. Приехав в Нью-Йорк в 1978 году, молодой художник стал искать какую– нибудь работу. Друзья-художники подрабаты- вали на строительстве. Кинг же решил найти постоянную работу. Однажды он натолкнулся на необычное объявление: «Работа с брилли- антами – научим». Это заинтересовало наше- го героя – интересная работа и без всякого опыта! Он отправился на интервью в Геммо- логический институт Америки (GIA), в знаме- нитый Бриллиантовый квартал на 47-й стрит, а остальное уже история. Кингу везло. В первый же год в Нью–Йор- ке он поступил на художественное отделение в Hunter College, а вскоре выиграл несколь- ко престижных наград, включая national endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant. Ра- бота геммологом пришлась по душе. Он се- рьезно увлекся бриллиантами и стал быстро продвигаться по службе. Кинг не только до сих пор работает в той же компании, но и воз- главил ее и даже добился мировой известнос- ти в своей редкой профессии. На должности технического директора он стал одним из ру- ководителей GIA, наиболее авторитетной и престижной компании в профессиональном мире. Кинг пишет геммологические статьи и кни- ги, выступает на симпозиумах, читает лекции и постоянно колесит по миру, часто бывая в Голландии, Бельгии, Великобритании, Южной Африке, Гонконге, консультируя крупнейшие геммологические центры. Впрочем, Кинг за- являет: «Если бы я мог себе это позволить, то ни секунды не раздумывая, целиком пос- вятил себя искусству. Это было бы истинное счастье!». Между тем, многие из подчиненных Кинга даже не догадываются об увлечении их босса. Для них он строгий шеф и исследова- тель в области цветных бриллиантов.

Beeswax rain of Artist John King | author Vladimir Belogolovsky | new york, UsA I was lured into the studio of New York City-based artist John King by surrealistic images created by undertones and scrupu- lously built into many layers of abstraction suspended between the dream and reality. The artist has been working on them in- tuitively and consistently for almost 30 years. This art is diffi- cult to understand. Usual things like flowers, spikes of grass, shells, nuts, snowflakes, moths and wicks of candles invite us into a strange unearthly world. King’s images are combinations of dreams, visions, and something incomprehensible, something that cannot be explained in words. Though the artist told me a story of his art in very simple words. King lives and works in Soho in a spacious studio that takes up the whole of the fifth floor in an old cast iron building dec- orated with Corinthian columns. He has been living in his loft with his wife Nancy since 1980, the spouses met several years earlier in the Wayne State University in Detroit, where they studied art. He has collected hundreds of cherished paintings, big and small, in his apartment, and works of other artists he is friends with, which were either given as gifts or exchanged for something, hang on the walls. King makes an impression of a university professor, a person of sophisticated and refined man- ners. He speaks convincingly and specifically, easily choosing the right and precise words. Art plays major role in the artist’s life. It is natural and it goes without saying. However, King’s personality has attracted my interest also because he is living two lives. His mundane profession is gemology, the study of gems. It was a pure inci- dent that he chose this job that earns him a chance to create his artworks. Having come to New York City in 1978, the young artist started looking for some job. His friends who were artists earned some extra money at construction companies. King de- cided to find a permanent job. Once he came across an unusual ad. «Work with diamonds – we’ll teach you how». He was inter- ested in the possibility – it was an interesting job and no experi- ence was required. He went for an interview to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to the famous Diamond district on West 47th Street, and the rest is history. King was lucky. During his first year in New York City he en- tered Hunter College Department of Art, and soon won several prestigious awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant. He liked the job of a gemologist. He was seriously interested in diamonds and his career advanced quick- ly. King continues to work for the same company and moreo- ver he has become a project officer and even earned universal acclaim in his rare profession. At the position of the techni- cal director he became one of the officers of the GIA, the most reputable and prestigious company in the professional world. King writes articles and books on gemology, makes speeches at symposiums, gives lectures and travels the world, often vis- iting Holland, Belgium, Great Britain, South Africa, Hong Kong, advising to major gemological centres. However, King says, «If I could only afford it, then I would not give it a second thought and would completely commit myself to art. That would be pure happiness!» Meanwhile, many of King’s subordinates do not even imagine what their boss’ favourite pastime is. They consider him to be a strict boss and a researcher of coloured diamonds. John was born in 1954 in a working-class family. He inherit- ed his industrious and persistent character from his father who worked in a steel shop. As far back as he can remember, he

В студию нью–йоркского художника Джо- на Кинга меня привели сотканные из полуто- нов сюрреалистические образы, скрупулезно выстроенные в зависшие между сном и реаль- ностью многослойные абстракции. Мастер со- здает их интуитивно и последовательно уже почти 30 лет. Это трудное для понимания ис- кусство. Обычные предметы – цветы, колос- ки, ракушки, орешки, снежинки, мотыльки и лучинки свечей манят в совсем незнакомый, потусторонний мир. Образы Кинга складыва- ются из мечтаний, видений, чего–то непос- тижимого и меньше всего из того, что можно объяснить словами. Впрочем, о своем искус- стве художник поведал мне самыми обычны- ми словами. Кинг живет и творит в СоХо в простор- ной студии, целиком занимающей пятый этаж дома старой постройки, украшенного коринф- скими колоннами из чугуна. Он живет в своем лофте с женой Нэнси с 1980 года, а познако- мились супруги несколькими годами ранее в университете wayne state в Детройте, где оба изучали искусство. В его жилище собраны сотни дорогих сердцу больших и малых кар- тин, а еще на стенах развешены подаренные и обмененные работы друзей–художников.
