To the right, on Gammelstrand, (the old beach) the famous fish market, with fishmongers from Skovshoved in original costumes. Also the monument o f a fishmonger, (“ Fiskerkonen” ). To the wcst the Church o f the Holy Ghost, (Helligåndskirken), first mentioned as a monastery chapel around the year 1400. The church was partly dcstroyed by the fire in 1728, and reconstructed in renaissance stylc in 1880. The porch, from 1620, dates from the reign o f King Christian IV. On the north side o f the church the burial chapel o f Griffenfeld. (Danish statesman, premier from 1670 onwards, died in exile in Norway in 1699, not buried in the chapel he himself had built in his days o f glory). Helligåndshuset, (house o f the Holy Ghost), part o f the former monastery. about the only gothic building in Copen­ hagen, built around 1475, has been used as hospital, prison, now a municipal library. Returning by Amagertorv through “ Strøget” , passing by modern department stores and elegant shops to Kongens Nytorv (The king’s new market), the greatest open square in the town, the junction of 13 streets. In the centre o f the square an equestrian statue o f King Christian V. To the left from “ Strøget” the elegant hotel “ d’Angle- terre” . At the corner o* Bredgade (broad Street) and Kongens Nytorv the palais Thott, (Thottske Palæ), now the French embassy, built in 1685 by the naval hero Niels Juel. Opposite, along the canal, Nyhavn, (new harbour), with many pictuiesque buddings, best view from Cliarlottcnborg. This palais built around 1675, and in 1754 donated by King Frederik V to the Royal Academy. Now mainly used for art exhibitions. Further to the right the Boyal Theatre, (Det kongelige Teater), built in 1874 in renaissance style. Main entrancc flanked by the statues o f the writers Holberg and Ochlenschlågcr. In the entrance hall, marble statues of the writers Ewald and Wessel. In the foyers o f the teatre many busts and paintings o f well-known writers, actors and composers. I11 1931 a new scene was built, connected with the original theatre by a vaulted bridge, popularly called the “ starling’s nest” . The vault is decorated with a mosaic by prof. Ejnar Nielsen. To the south by Holmens Kanal to Holmens Kirke (naval church) passing by several main banking offices and the characteristic main building o f the “East Asiatic Company” , with a statue o f the naval hero Niels Juel in front. Holmens Church was originally a naval smithy and mint, but in 1619 King Christian IV transformed the building into a church for the Royal navy. In 1905 a chapel was added along the canal with the
