Across the Slotsholmen (Castle Island) the National Museum (Nationalmuseet) in Prinsens Palæ, (palais-of the prince), (see page 36). Further through Stormgade to Dantes Plads and the N y Carlsberg Glyptotek, (description page 36), (see page 32). Northwards from the Rådhusplads the Vester Voldgade leads to Jarmers Plads. In the enclosure the ruins o f the Jarmers Tårn, (tower o fJaromir), a part o f the former city fortifications, built in 1528, o f red bricks. Opposite one o f the entranccs to the Ørstedspark, which has been laid out at the end o f the last century on a section of the former moats. Here are statues o f the two brothers, the scicntists H. C. and A. S. Ørsted. Continuing by Nørrevoldgadc along the Ørstedspark, and turning to the left through Ahlefcldtsgade, one arrives at the Grønttorvet, the flower and vegetable market, where every morning a lively trade in flowers and vegetables goes on. Slotsholmen and Christianshavn Slotsholmen, (Castle Island) is surrounded by canals and linked with the adjacent parts o f the town by 8 bridges, o f which we mention Stormbroen, near the national museum, Højbro, (Højbroplads) and Holmens Bro, (Holmens Kirke). Anno 1167 bishop Absalon erectcd the first castle here to protcct the harbour, on the site o f the present Chri­ stiansborg Castle. The ruins of these first fortifications were ex- cavated in 1906 and 1918. They can be seen below the present structure, as well as the remnants of later constructions, such as the Blue Tower, (Blåtårn), formerly used as State prison. Admittance through the main cntrancc. (Opening hours, see page 000). The castle has been ravaged many times by fires and enemy attacks. The present structure is the 6th castle on this site, and was built in the years following 1907, and is faced with granite from Bornholm, and partly with stone from all over the country, a piece from each parish. The castle is considercd the official residcnce o f the king, and is also the seat o f parliament and the supremc court, as well as o f the ministry o f foreign affairs. The royal official residence is in the northern wing o f the castle. O11 the open square in front o f the castle an equestrian statue of King Frederik VII, who in 1849 gave Denmark its constitution. At the royal cntrance statues of Hercules, Minerva, Nemesis and Esculap. The chapcl of the castle, (Slotskirken), also used at the official openings of parliament, is linked with the castle. The chapel was built in 1826 and its altar carries the Angles by Thorvaldsen.
