Behind thc church Thorvaldsens Museum. (Descripdon, page 32), (Admittancc, page 37). Opposite the Southern wing (with Parliament) the State Archives (Rigsarkivet), this budding being a remnant o f an earlier Christiansborg Castle. Through the vaulted entrance to thc Bibliotekshave (Garden o f thc Royal Library), laid out in 1868 on a fdled in naval harbour from thc reign o f Christian IV. In this very beautiful garden bronze statues o f the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and the statesman GrifFcnfeld. At the other end o f the garden the Kongelige Bibliotek (Royal Library), the greatest in Scandinavia, whose beginnings date back to King Frederik III. The library contains a very important collcction o f rare first prints. Admittance to the reading room weekdays 9 a. m .-io p.m. (April-September, the library closes at 7 p.m. The Tøjhuset (former military depot) borders the garden. Southeast of the castle, on the canal thc Børsen (Stock Exchange), built in the years 1619-40 by King Christian IV in Dutch Renaissance, an architectural gem. The budding is 126 metres long, and its peculiar tower, whose spire consists o f the twisted tails o f four dragons, is $4 metres high. Across the Knippclsbro to the quarter of thc town called Christi­ anshavn and Vor Frelser Kirke, (Our Saviour’s Church), built in 1696 in baroque style, considered to be one of thc most beautiful churchcs in Copenhagcn. The tower with the peculiar outside spiral built in 1750. The 150 coppcr-coated steps of this outside spiral staircase lead up to the great ball with the nearly three metre high figure o f the Saviour, holding the banner of victory. The church contains many objects o f interest, an alabaster font, with a carved baldachin, and an altar of multi-colourcd marblc and wood. Rosenborg - Langelinje - Amalienborg From Kongens Nytorv through Gothersgade to Kongens Have, the oldest park o f thc town, laid out by King Christian IV in 1606. Contains several statues, o f which we can mention those of H. C. An­ dersen and queen Caroline Amalie. On thc north side, at Øster Vold­ gade, the beautiful Rosenborg Slot (castle of the roses), budt by King Christian IV in 1608-17 as a garden lodge, now a museum with furniture, costumes and wcapons from period o f King Christian IV, and of the Oldcnburg dynasty generally (reigning in Dcnmark 1448- 1863).
