Copenhagen-Hillerød Trains to Hillerød, (36 km) cvcry hour from the main station, or stations Nørreport and Østerport. Hillerød, 8887 inhabitants, foundcd by King Frederik II, in 1569, has grown up in the shadow of the castle Hillerødholm, (Frederiksborg Slot). Borough in 1661, ravaged by fires 1698, 1733 and again in 1834. King Frederik II exchangcd his hunting lodge Skovkloster ncar Næstved, (the present Herlufsholm, now a wellknown public school), for Hillerødholm, then belonging to Herluf Trollc, one of the prominent noblemen of the period. Rcmnants of the castle o f Frederik II are the S-shaped bridge with two round towers and the adjacent stablcs. King Christian IV was born here. In 1602-08 he constructed the new imposing castle in Dutch renais- sance style. The main budding has four stories. The imposing clock tower is 92 metres high. In 1859 the castle was ravaged by fire, which destroyed a great many of the rich art treasures. After the fire the castle was reconstructed in the same style through voluntary contributions and State subsidies, and cspecially through the contributions of brewer I. C. Jacobsen and the Carlsbcrg-Foundation. The castle was henceforth a museum of national history. (The chapel), decorated with marvel- lous splendour, the altar and pulpit of ebony with silver figures. Richly decorated and carved pews. The organ has 1001 pipes and dates from 1612.
