GOAL OF PROGRAM: By providing enriching and broadening service opportunities in a Benedictine environment, our goal is to inspire a spirit of service and discernment by which each volunteer fully realizes the unique call God has placed in her heart to joyfully animate the world with God’slove, compassion, and justice. Our hope is that volunteers exit our program better empowered to live their purpose and be God’s hands and feet in the Church and world. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers are given a wide variety of service opportunities across each of our three monastery sites. Each woman is individually matched to a community and to service opportunities that meet her unique gifts and desires to serve. These service opportunities include: archives, calligraphy and painting, elderly care and recreation, gardening, health care, Hispanic, hospital, hospitality, library, liturgy and music, home building, orphanage assistance, photography, multicultural, poverty alleviation, prison, switchboards, teaching, and university ministries. AREA OF SERVICE: North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas LENGTH OF SERVICE: 2 weeks - 2 years REQUIREMENTS: Catholic women, ages 20-58, not married, no dependents. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room, board, and a small monthly stipend. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in community housing at one of the monastery sites and participate in the monastic rhythm of life including daily Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, community meals and recreation, and working hand-in-hand with the sisters to extend the mission and ministries of each community. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 5 to 10 volunteers AREA OF SERVICE: Madison, WI LENGTH OF SERVICE: Six months beginning in June each year. For 2019 only, six months beginning either in June or September REQUIREMENTS: Single, Christian women, 30-50, without dependents. Physically and emotionally healthy. Celibate living. Willingness to dialogue about their experiences in community. Application and overnight retreat, phone interview and two-week visit required prior to acceptance. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board included; monthly stipend; health insurance if needed. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Living in community with the sisters SIZE OF PROGRAM: 1-3 volunteers. TRAINING: Orientation to Benedictine spirituality, Liturgy of Hours and centering prayer; lectio divina; classes in community living, faith sharing, retreats, optional spiritual guidance. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Long-term: Our volunteers in Cofraidia and Vida Nueva share several living spaces (two people to each bedroom) close to the center of Cofradia. Our two houses are situated in an elevated part of Cofradia and have a picturesque view of the Merendon mountains from the airy patio areas. We also rent several apartments in one building immediately off the town's main square. Our volunteers at Amigos de Jesus live in our staff house, somewhat apart from the children's home and our school. Short-term: Summer camp volunteers live in the full-year BECA volunteer accommodations during their time in Cofradia. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Long-term: For the 2019-2020 school year the BECA program will have 39 year long volunteers across our three schools. Short-term: We seek approximately 10 - 12 Summer Camp Counselors for our annual Summer Camp. TRAINING: Long-term: BECA volunteers begin their volunteer year with an intense and comprehensive 6-week summer training led by veteran teachers and teacher trainers that will prepare them for the duties and challenges they will face once the school year starts. Apart from our signature training program, we ensure the ongoing professional growth of our volunteers through quarterly professional development days and our weekly Culture in Context course that engages our volunteers in discussions focused on (a) collective action, (b) social change, (c) contextual understanding, (d) and root causes of social injustices in Honduras. We want your year with BECA to be a professional leap forward. Upon completion of service, we offer career development assistance and access to BECA’s extensive, and growing, network of over 200 alumni. Short-term: Summer Camp volunteers receive a 3-day orientation and daily support by BECA’s Summer Camp Leader. They learn to live a balanced life of prayer, work, study and leisure in community and take their learning into their everyday lives. They participate in the mission and ministry of the Benedictine sisters at Holy Wisdom Monastery. The experience provides an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth through reflection and the daily rhythm of Benedictine life. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Benedictine Sojourners live, learn, pray and work with the sisters from various Christian traditions at Holy Wisdom Monastery. Participants cultivate a simple, communal lifestyle and follow monastic practices while at the monastery. Sojourners participate in the Liturgy of Hours three times a day and centering prayer twice a day. They work 20-25 hours a week in the ministry of the monastery. The specific work is determined based on the ministry available and the skills and interests of the participants. Work may include assistance in guest services or food service, teaching in the Sunday children's ministry, leading prayers or retreats, office work, maintenance, gardening, prairie and orchard maintenance, data entry, marketing and communications, writing.
