Thomas McNamara, Chaplain & Program Director AFFILIATIONS: Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Roman Catholic GOAL OF PROGRAM: Inspired by the vision of St. Francis of Assisi, Capuchin Youth & Family Ministries trains Cap Corps Volunteers and area youth to be leaders in the Catholic Church & assists them in deepening their personal faith. Through vibrant, well-established youth ministry & living in a Catholic community, Cap Corps Volunteers help renew the Church and mentor the faith life of teens. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Catholic Youth Ministry: Christ centered program where volunteers organize and lead youth retreats, provide peer ministry, teach leadership skills to teens, lead a youth group in a parish, and staff outreach and service programs. AREA OF SERVICE: Area north of New York City, Manhattan, and Boston. LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year, renewable, beginning in late August. REQUIREMENTS: Single men and women over 21 years of age. College graduate with aptitude and enthusiasm for youth ministry. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, $50/week stipend, medical insurance, one community car and gas money for ministry related activity. Partnerships with Boston College and Fordham University for Cap Corps, NY alumni interested in Graduate level degrees in Theology and Religious Studies. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Cap Corps Volunteers will live in community in a fully furnished eight bedroom house with chapel. Phone and internet provided. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Six to eight volunteers. TRAINING: Comprehensive orientation and training with on- going formation in Franciscan spirituality and ministry skills. Daily ministry with Capuchin Franciscan Friars and on-going mentoring. Community retreats & nights of reflection on Franciscan spirituality, community and ministry are integral parts of the program. Spiritual Direction available. AFFILIATIONS: Private, nonprofit corporation GOAL OF PROGRAM: Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos - The House of Hope for Children - is a safe place for children in crisis due to abuse, neglect, or the effects of HIV. Casa de Esperanza provides residential, medical and psychological care according to the needs of each child. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: A volunteer's primary responsibility will be to provide direct care to children six years and younger in a home setting. Volunteers will function as foster parents for the children in their care. Tasks will include everything necessary to properly and safely care for, advocate for and generally meet the daily needs of abused, neglected and HIV+ children. Please call for more specific information. AREA OF SERVICE: Houston, TX LENGTH OF SERVICE: Long-term: Typically 12 months - with applications accepted throughout the year and multiple start dates. Other shorter options are sometimes available. Please call to inquire. Two-year commitments or longer are available. Significant stipend increase after completion of first year of volunteer work. REQUIREMENTS: A 4-year college degree is preferred, but not required. Applicants should be willing to work closely with children and to take on high levels of responsibility. Good interpersonal skills, patience and a strong work ethic are needed. Position open to anyone, but particularly useful to psychology, social work, education, pre-med, nursing and early childhood majors/graduates or those interested in social justice issues. You must be 21 or older to apply with a valid driver's license. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Housing, partial board, stipend of $600 per month, health and optional dental and vision insurance, 2 weeks vacation. Casa de Esperanza offers a $2000 one-year completion of service bonus. For those staying longer than one year, a significant stipend increase may be available for the second year. Short-term: Room, partial board, stipend of $600 per month. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live on-site with other volunteers in a house with 4 or 5 children. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 25 volunteers annually. TRAINING: All volunteers receive training, including Pre-Service training, CPR/First Aid, Behavior Intervention Training, and review of the Staff Training Manual. Additional training for long-term volunteers continues throughout the year. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications are accepted all year. Those who are interested in the Completion of Service Bonus must typically complete 12 months of service, but there are limited positions available for those looking for 3-9 month service periods. Box 70113 Houston, TX 77270 713-869-7376 info@cjd.org w cjd.org CONTACT: Louise Zwick, Director AFFILIATIONS: Catholic Worker Movement (Dorothy Day) GOAL OF PROGRAM: Volunteers, both men and women, work with Spanish-speaking immigrants and refugees to provide shelter, food, clothing, transportation, medical and dental services, and English classes. Women volunteers also work with Spanish-speaking battered and/or homeless women and children. Being at Casa Juan Diego is similar to being in Latin America. Most guests speak only Spanish. Volunteers are encouraged to respond as a community to the needs of the refugees that come to Casa Juan Diego as well as the Spanish- speaking who live in Houston. The hours are long but the work is gratifying. Faith commitment is important.
