We provide a supportive, faith-based, intergenerational environment within the Dominican way of life. Volunteers have opportunities to respond to the needs of our sisters and brothers, especially those who are economically poor and marginalized, in locations across the United States. Our program values the commitment to the four pillars of Dominican spirituality: prayer, study, community, and ministry, as well as the unique experience provided by our intergenerational and intervocational communities. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Healthcare, nursing, social work, education (all levels), child care, refugee/immigration services, Hispanic ministry, social service agencies, parish/youth/campus ministry, literacy education, elderly outreach, peace and justice advocacy, women and children programs, environmental services, farming, community organizing, homeless shelters. AREA OF SERVICE: Throughout the United States, including: Manhattan, NY; Amityville, NY; Caldwell, NJ; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Redwood City, CA; Atlanta, GA; Grand Rapids, MI; Racine, WI. LENGTH OF SERVICE: August to July, one year renewable. REQUIREMENTS: Women and men with Christian motivation, single or married without dependents, ages 21 years and older, two years of college or work experience, with the ability to adapt to various kinds of work and living accommodations. Willingness to live in community with vowed Catholic religious. Appropriate degree/certification required for certain positions. Interview. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, $125 monthly stipend, public transportation pass in service city, $300 at the end of service commitment (for non-AmeriCorps), medical insurance, three retreats. Some are eligible for AmeriCorps Education Awards depending on the placement (when available). LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in intergenerational Dominican communities of women and/or men and other volunteers. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 20-25 TRAINING: Orientation program in August, mid-year retreat in January or February, and closing weekend in July. Ongoing staff development at work-site. AFFILIATIONS: Ecumenical. Officially partnered with Mennonite Mission Network and the Young Adult Volunteers (YAV) program of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). GOAL OF PROGRAM: DOOR is a faith-based network of cities that provides opportunities for service, learning, and leadership development within the urban context. DOOR is an opportunity to encounter the city through the eyes, ears, and heart of God. We are dedicated to providing high quality, life-changing experiences for our participants, staff, board members, and the people in the communities where we are established. Our programming is rooted in the strength of local churches and communities, mutual respect, a culture of welcome and hospitality, and thoughtful reflection. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Just as urban ministry is wide ranging, so are our placements. Each city welcomes multilingual volunteers. We have placements serving women, families, men, homeless, migrants, or working poor. Some placements include environmental, educational, immigration/legal advocacy, direct service, supporting services, literacy, health care, or counseling work. Short-term participants serve alongside a variety of agencies and ministries in a different project each day. AREA OF SERVICE: Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; and Miami, FL LENGTH OF SERVICE: Yearlong volunteers serve at least 11 months and may renew for an additional year. Summer staff positions are available each year. We also host service trips for weekends, weeks, and alternative breaks. REQUIREMENTS: Some yearlong placements require specific skills or 2-4 years of college. Short term participants do not require any specific skills, experience, or education. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: The yearlong program provides housing, utilities, food shared by community, small personal stipend, public transit pass, medical insurance (if needed), books for common reading and study, several retreats throughout the year, and two weeks vacation. Participants are asked to raise a portion of their support. Short-term (weekend and weeklong): visit our website (doornetwork.org) for current rates, which cover lodging, meals, work site supplies, coordination, and staffing. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Yearlong participants live in intentional Christian community houses. Community life is guided by a mutually- written covenant. Short-term volunteers are housed in partner churches. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Yearlong: Households include three to six participants each. Each city has one unit. Short-term: Each city hosts 300-600 weekend and weeklong volunteers per year. TRAINING: All training necessary is done on-site. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Yearlong program: application deadline is June 1. Weekend / Weeklong program: registrations are accepted all year.
