Eight years and hundreds of group emails later, we are still connected, despite seeing each other only sporadically over the years. We laugh about our year, shake our heads at our year, and know that without it, none of us would be who we are today. ERIN, COLORADO VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS

Formation will begin in the end of August and run until the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The two-week Re-Entry Retreat is held for returning missioners after their time abroad ends. Short- termMission and Global Awareness Trips: DC Service Corps: Group orientation upon arrival with weekly leadership training, professional development, retreats and faith formation throughout the year of service. Short-termMission and Global Awareness Trips: Pre-trip webinars and preparation resources. On-site workshops and guided reflections during trip. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Overseas Lay Mission Program: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a couple of discernment retreats in Washington, DC, each spring for in-person interviews. Priority deadline for Phase 1 applications is January 1. Final deadline for Phase 1 applications is April 1. Training begins at the end of August. GOAL OF PROGRAM: To provide opportunities for volunteers who wish to help people who are homeless with human needs of food and shelter with respect and compassion. This setting offers volunteers the opportunity to develop relationships with our guests and encourages volunteers to examine their own values and develop their personal strengths in a concrete lived reality. Franciscan Outreach Volunteers program is based on the values of Service, Community, Spirituality and Simple Living. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers live and work at Franciscan Outreach (FO), a non-profit agency providing emergency and long- term services to those who are homeless, poor, and marginalized in Chicago. Volunteers work directly with those who are homeless, providing hospitality and services. Marquard Center Soup Kitchen: serves a full meal to an average of 85 guests a day and offers drop off laundry service, showers, mail service, and access to health care workers and case management. Franciscan House Shelter: 215 men and 35 women nightly, dinner and breakfast, showers, clothing, mail service, access to medical personnel and case workers. Case Management: Collaborating with staff to connect guests to social

services, distribute donations, mail service, develop programming. Development Assistant: Assisting with data entry, thank-you letters, scheduling community volunteer projects, special events support, and more. Also, aiding in the creation of human interest stories about the people who receive assistance through the services provided at Franciscan Outreach. AREA OF SERVICE: Chicago, IL LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year, renewable REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree preferred. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma and a valid drivers license. A desire to live out the core values of Spirituality, Service, Community and Simple Living. Applicants must be able to pass background checks. Ability to live in community environment with up to 12 other individuals. Ability to handle responsibility and treat guests with respect and dignity. Previous experience with people who are homeless is helpful but not necessary. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, monthly stipend of $200, medical insurance, transportation stipend, use of vehicles, vacation time and two days off per week. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers from both work sites live together at the Marquard Center in Wicker Park, Chicago. Volunteers each have private bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchen, living room, laundry, etc. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 10-12 volunteers TRAINING: Three retreats a year, weekly reflections, meetings and community nights. It is a group of lay people either from the local community or from other areas who are committed to a year or more of service to the poor and marginalized peoples of the geographic area served by the Friars of Our Lady of Guadalupe Province. They come to live with and empower the people with whom they will minister. They come to learn rather than to teach. These men and women share a desire to grow in their knowledge and experience of the Franciscan charism as they respond to a call to minister to others in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and thereby assume their
