Openness to Catholic traditions and Catholic social teaching. Willingness to do manual labor in the gardens and with home-repair projects. Ability to live in community. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Community Members: Monthly stipend (starting at $125), Health Stipend, Loan assistance ($125/ mo), Food and Housing provided; Sojourners: No stipend. Food and Housing provided. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Community Members live in intentional community, each with their own bedroom; Sojourners will live in the same house with our community of 6-10 individuals, and may share a room with other Sojourners. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Community Members: 5-9; Sojourners: 6-10. TRAINING: On site training will be provided. No skills required. GOAL OF PROGRAM: The Jesuit Volunteer Corps engages brave young believers in vital service in marginalized communities, fostering the growth of leaders committed to faith in action. Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) work throughout 48 communities in seven countries by serving the poor directly and by working for structural change. Volunteers live a simple lifestyle in community with other volunteers and seek to develop spiritually in the Ignatian tradition. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: JVC offers a very wide range of ministries including teaching, youth ministry and mentoring, homeless advocacy, domestic violence and sexual assault counseling, environmental stewardship, legal aid, farm worker outreach, refugee resettlement, elderly outreach, addiction recovery services, nursing, hospice ministry, AIDS services and community organizing. AREA OF SERVICE: Throughout the U.S., as well as Belize, Chile, Micronesia, Nicaragua, Peru, Tanzania. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Most domestic placements require a commitment of one year, renewable, starting mid-August. South Dakota and international placements require a commitment of two years.
