AREA OF SERVICE: Jesuit Volunteers serve in 23 urban, rural, and remote locales across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, including alongside Native American and Native Alaskan communities. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Jesuit Volunteers make a service commitment of one year, beginning in August through the end of July, and have the option to reapply for additional years of service. REQUIREMENTS: JVC Northwest welcomes persons of every race, ethnicity, origin, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender expression, economic status, and political affiliation. Applicants must be 21 years or older and have a college degree or applicable work experience. Applicants cannot be married, and we ask that applicants' marital status not change during the service year. A small number of placements require specific certification or skill (i.e. Teaching, Nursing, Spanish proficiency). FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: JVC Northwest provides room and board, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance. 142 of 160 positions are AmeriCorps positions, so JV AmeriCorps members can receive forbearance and deferment on qualified student loans during the year, and the $5,815 Education Award upon successful completion of the year to pay back qualified student loans or pay for future education. Each JV is responsible for transportation costs to Portland, Oregon at the start of the service year. JVC Northwest provides transportation from Orientation to each locale; each placement provides transportation for their JV to return home at the end of the year. JVs with JVC Northwest do not need to fundraise to be part of the program. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Jesuit Volunteers live in intentional community with three to seven other Jesuit Volunteers. SIZE OF PROGRAM: There are approximately 145-155 volunteers each year. TRAINING: JVs receive an initial five-day JVC Northwest Orientation at the beginning of the service year; local orientations to the communities are provided as well. Agencies where JVs serve provide on-site orientation and pertinent training for positions. In addition, three retreats are offered throughout the service year. APPLICATION DEADLINE: The Priority Deadline for applications is in early February each year, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis after the Priority Deadline until all placements are filled. Each year, over 150 full-time Jesuit Volunteer (JV)/ AmeriCorps members commit to a year or more of service focusing on the values of community, spirituality/reflection, simple living, and social and ecological justice. During their year, volunteers support people living on the margins of society and fragile ecosystems throughout the Northwest. JVs are supported by professional staff who provide a week-long orientation at the beginning of the program year; three retreats throughout the year; two week-long visits; and ongoing support by phone and email. Additionally, the JVs enjoy vast a network of former Jesuit Volunteers and community members who mentor and support them in and after their year of service. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: JVC Northwest offers a wide variety of placements serving children, women, and men who often are invisible and live on the margins of society, as well as fragile ecosystems in the Northwest. Categories of service include: children/at-risk youth services, community organizing, education, environmental restoration and advocacy, abuse intervention & prevention, food justice and hunger, health, nursing, homelessness/housing services, legal services, pastoral ministry, refugee/immigration services, and senior services.
