Volunteers fulfill specific tasks that help "create home," such as cooking, and light household maintenance. Volunteers help plan and/ or participate in community events and celebrations. AREA OF SERVICE: Cleveland, OH; Erie, PA; Greater Washington, DC; Haverhill, MA; Syracuse, NY; Long Island, NY; Jacksonville, FL; Atlanta, GA; Mobile, AL; Kansas City, and St. Louis, MO; Clinton, IA; Chicago, IL; Spokane, WA; Seattle, WA; Tacoma, WA; Portland, OR; Orange LENGTH OF SERVICE: A preference of a one year or two year commitment, with the possibility of longer-term. A few communities offer summer placements. REQUIREMENTS: A willingness to live in an intentional, interfaith community living with adults with intellectual disabilities and others wanting to share life together. Commitment to personal growth in an atmosphere that is both fun and challenging. Experience with people with disabilities is not required. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, stipend, and medical insurance. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Communities are comprised of homes where volunteers live with people with intellectual disabilities. Communities vary in size from one to seven homes. Some L'Arche communities also have day programs and workshops for people with intellectual disabilities. SIZE OF PROGRAM: There are 18 L'Arche communities across the U.S. Depending on the size of the community, there are 3-45 assistants per community, with 1-15 of these assistants being volunteers (the others are in employee or administrative roles). TRAINING: Each community provides an individual orientation for volunteers. There may be additional trainings provided by L'Arche or the state. Volunteers are usually required to complete a CPR/First Aid course. There are opportunities to participate in personal and community retreats. Many communities offer opportunities to receive spiritual direction. Acting out of faith, rooted in the Gospel, and sharing community with the Brothers and other Lasallians, the Volunteers empower the poor by personalized service primarily through education. Lasallian Volunteers change the world for the better and discover themselves transformed in the process. More than a third of the volunteers return for additional years of service. To date, more than 700 volunteers have participated in this intense program of faith, community and service. Many of them continue to serve in Lasallian Ministries today. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Teacher/tutor in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, adult education programs, outdoor education programs and after school programs. Case Managers/Social Workers; Campus Ministry/Retreat Work/Service Outreach coordinating; Coaching Sports Teams; Adventure-based Recreation Leader.

GOAL OF PROGRAM: Lamp Catholic Ministries is a lay missionary association. Its participants seek to move with the beating Heart of Jesus in his love for the poor by serving full-time in materially poor parishes, shelters for homeless families, pregnancy crisis outreach, St. evangelization, and other outreaches among the materially poor, for one full year or longer, renewable. The service, while holistic, has evangelization as its primary focus. Opportunity for life-time vocation. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Evangelization/outreach, youth ministry, adult education, poverty relief services, elderly outreach, hospital/nursing homes, parish/pastoral ministries, Hispanic ministry, street outreach, pregnancy crisis ministry, outreach to homeless families, prison ministry. AREA OF SERVICE: Metropolitan New York area: Archdiocese of New York, Diocese of Brooklyn. LENGTH OF SERVICE: One to two years to begin, can be renewed indefinitely; potential for permanent vocation. REQUIREMENTS: Men and women. Single, married, religious. Ages 22 years to 45 if living with other missionaries, or older if living at home. Physical examination. Psychological test. Catholic. Some college education. Some experience in ministry. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, stipend, medical insurance, transportation to and frommission site, living accommodations in community. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Community living, or for local members, at home. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 15 to 20 volunteers TRAINING: Orientation and in-service training. Support in specific ministries by staff, other educators and pastoral ministers. There are 18 communities in the United States. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: This is a live-in placement, in an intentional faith-based community. Volunteers provide direct care for adults with intellectual disabilities. This includes physical and emotional care, as well as helping them participate in social and recreational activities.
