TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Misericordia selects motivated post graduates to live in community and form a shared life with other volunteers at a place of residence located near Misericordia Home. Each volunteer will work in a role specifically selected to match the volunteer's gifts with the resident's needs. This role provides each volunteer an opportunity to experience a life of committed service with those with developmental disabilities among a dedicated professional staff. Come be a part of a very special family called Misericordia. Volunteers are guaranteed weekends away from the placement and week long summer and Christmas break. Participation in a volunteer community is an essential aspect of placement - includes opportunities for retreats, weekly dinners, weekly reflections, spiritual direction, etc. AREA OF SERVICE: Chicago, Illinois LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year - renewable REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university. Applicant should possess a willingness to reside in community and work with our residents. Applicants should be able to commit one year of service and have a valid driver's license. Physical examination, police background check and drug screening, DMV driving record are required. Interview and references also required. Applicants are considered for positions applied for without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability or any other basis prohibited by Federal or State law. All applicants must be able to lift 40 lbs in addition to other essential functions due to the physical care needs of the population served. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board. Eligibility to apply for medical insurance. Transportation stipend available for travel home following completion of the program. Eligibility for loan forbearance (when available). Stipend of $250 per month with an additional stipend for groceries. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteer members share living space with each other and are provided a private, furnished bedroom in our beautiful Driskill Residence located close to campus as well as the lakefront. SIZE OF PROGRAM: An average of eight volunteers each year. TRAINING: Volunteers will receive 5 weeks of training to include CPR, first aid, abuse/neglect, resident rights, nutrition, communication, etc. Training is very comprehensive - no prior experience working with persons with developmental disabilities is required for placement. GOAL OF PROGRAM: Mercy Volunteer Corps, committed to a more merciful and just world, invites women and men to a year of full-time service with people who are economically poor or marginalized. Volunteers commit to compassionate service, a simple lifestyle in community and spiritual growth. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Positions available in homeless and community outreach, peace and justice advocacy, immigration and refugee services, legal work, AIDS ministry, elderly outreach, domestic violence shelters, counseling, teaching (elementary, secondary, special education), tutoring (GED, adult literacy), after school programs, healthcare, therapy (physical, occupational, speech), and volunteer coordination. AREA OF SERVICE: Continental United States, and Guyana, South America. LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year commitment that begins at the end of July every year. Mercy Volunteers are welcome to apply for additional years of service. REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must be 21 and older. Men and women. Single, married with no dependents. All faith traditions. High school diploma; work experience or college education for some positions. Certification and license if appropriate. Application, physical examination, and personal interview. Gifted with compassion, open- mindedness, a desire to grow and be challenged, and a sense of humor! It is preferred that applicants for international placement have some significant experience either in a cross-cultural setting or with those who are poor and marginalized. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Housing, transportation, medical insurance, food & personal stipends, and school loan deferment. Volunteer must provide his/her own transportation to orientation in late July/ early August. Additionally, international volunteers are also asked to fulfill a fundraising commitment, provide their own transportation to an interview weekend, and cover the costs of any required immunizations. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Mercy Volunteers live together in community. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 35-50 volunteers per year. TRAINING: One week of orientation is provided in August to familiarize volunteers with Mercy Volunteer Corps. On-site orientation is also provided to familiarize volunteers with the local culture, geographical area and site(s) of service. Mid-year and transitional retreats are offered as well as opportunities for support, and spiritual and personal growth. International volunteers complete a collaborative cross- cultural preparation prior to the MVC orientation. APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 18 is the Priority deadline for the US and International Program. March 1 is the Final deadline for the International Program.
