SIZE OF PROGRAM: In our smaller homes there is usually a handful (under 10) volunteers. In larger homes there are up to 20 international volunteers. TRAINING: Prior to service, NPH USA assists with volunteer selection and provides support in the form of conference calls, online training and written preparation materials. Volunteers participate in an online course called Impact Abroad Toolkit as well as the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale. At the beginning of service all NPH volunteers participate in a two-week training on site. After service NPH USA offers 2 Reflection/Retreat Weekends for former volunteers. APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 1st for July placement, July 1st for January placement. We often accept applicants after the deadline. Even if the deadline has passed we encourage you to submit an application. We are a team of Honduran nationals and foreign volunteers dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by providing an environment that stimulates intellectual and spiritual growth. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers serve in roles within the Foundation as needed, often in education, administration, and child care. Specific assignments will be discussed through the interview process and during orientation once on the ground in Honduras. Example roles include: Summer Camp Counselor, Adult ESL Instructor, Resource Teacher, Co-Teacher, Science Lab Coordinator, Art/Music Teacher, Librarian, Water Project Auditor, Social Media Intern, etc. Mission teams: We welcome mission teams to serve in various projects within the Olancho area. AREA OF SERVICE: Juticalpa is a mid-sized city located in the department of Olancho in central Honduras. It is roughly a 3-hour drive from the capital, Tegucigalpa. Largely an agricultural area, Juticalpa suffers from underdevelopment and poverty. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Our volunteers commit to serve four months with potential to extend. Terms of service are Early January - Mid May, Late April - Late August, and Mid August - Mid December. MISSION TEAM: 7-10 days REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers: Two years of post-high school work, education, or other experience; Experience working with children; Experience traveling or living in Latin America and/or developing countries; Basic knowledge of Spanish language; Ability to live in basic living conditions; Willingness to participate in community activities; Willingness to live in accordance with Christian values and to attend religious retreats and Catholic mass. Mission Teams must have a team leader to work with our Mission Team Coordinator in preparation of their trip. Groups can customize their experience to participate in various capacities, including medical missions, construction projects, and/or social service initiatives. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers: Monthly stipend to cover food and utilities; International travel medical insurance; Housing; Local cell phone and charger; and Wireless internet. L @nphusa  @nphusa CONTACT: Vicky Medley, International Volunteer Program Director AFFILIATIONS: Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos GOAL OF PROGRAM: Founded in 1954, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters") strives to create a loving and safe family environment for vulnerable children living in extreme conditions. Through comprehensive education, healthcare and spiritual formation, NPH gives children the opportunity to develop their potential, shaping better futures for themselves, their families and their communities. NPH is currently supporting more that 5,000 boys and girls in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Peru, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. International volunteers are important members of the NPH family. Our volunteers serve alongside the local staff, and provide services that are hard to find in Latin America. All volunteers hold a job during the day and spend time each evening and weekend with children. Our volunteers come from all around the world, and live in community at NPH. We accept single volunteers, married couples and 2 parent families with children. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: All NPH volunteers have a job during the day, which is selected based on a volunteer's skills and interests as well as what NPH needs. Most volunteers work as child care providers, ESL teachers, nurses, tutors, youth ministers, speech language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists, OneWorld Surgery Center support staff, activities coordinators, communication officers, visitor/volunteer coordinators, etc. We try and match a volunteer's skills and interests to our needs. Our positions are updated every 6 months on the NPH website. In addition to their regular job, volunteers spend time each night (and every other weekend) with a group of children. AREA OF SERVICE: Mexico (2 locations: Cuernavaca and Miacatlan), Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador (rarely), Nicaragua, Peru, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. *In years past we have had a short term summer program, but we have been shrinking it. Please check with our staff to make sure there will be a summer program in 2020 prior to applying.* LENGTH OF SERVICE: NPH homes require a 13 month commitment. Once volunteers have served for at least 6 months they may extend their service, based on an agreement between the volunteer and the NPH leadership. REQUIREMENTS: Must be 21 years of age, in good health. Priority is given to Spanish/Creole speakers. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: NPH volunteers receive a stipend of $50 to $100 per month, free room, all meals, and access to limited health care. Health care facilities vary home to home. Volunteers must pay for their flight to and from the country where they will serve. NPH staff will pick up volunteers when they arrive at the airport or bus station. NPH USA pays for international health insurance. It covers emergency care and evacuation, but does not cover care in the US. Volunteers should maintain US health insurance. Volunteers with weak language skills must pay for language school in the country where they will serve. NPH provides guidance on selecting a language school. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in group houses - they share a room with up to four other volunteers. There are shared kitchens and living space.
