Lucian Clark, Director AFFILIATIONS: Eastern Province, Congregation of the Passion, Roman Catholic GOAL OF PROGRAM: Passionist Volunteers International appeals to a cross section of people - age, gender and background - inviting them to share their gifts and talents while walking with the poor and accompanying the suffering in a cross-cultural setting. The Volunteers have the opportunity to enrich their lives and enable their service by living in community, sharing spirituality and faith. They serve in collaboration with the Passionist Community with its focus on the Passion of Jesus as found in those suffering among us today. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Focus - Accompaniment of the poor and suffering: as community's needs are revealed and volunteers' interests, abilities and talents are determined, appropriate service ventures and projects emerge. Needs are abundant; possibilities are endless, e.g. classroom/school needs for children and remedial educational needs for adults; clinic-based caring for the sick, visiting the home-bound; training in hygiene and preventive care; youth ministry - organizing, coaching, mentoring; housing - building and repair. AREA OF SERVICE: Jamaica, West Indies; (Diocese of Mandeville) LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year commitment, second year negotiable. REQUIREMENTS: Men and women, ages 22 to 28 at time of service, college degree or comparable work experience; U.S. or Canadian citizenship; good physical and mental health; adaptability and sense of humor; ability and willingness to walk with the suffering; committed to sharing faith and spirituality by living and serving in a Christian community with a simple lifestyle; emphasis on discernment and interview process. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board; community living costs; medical insurance; transportation to and frommission site; monthly stipend- All covered by Passionist Volunteers International. Fundraising by volunteer is encouraged, and program helps create development plan for fundraising goals. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in a faith-based community with the other Passionist Volunteers. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Accepts up to eight volunteers per year. TRAINING: Discernment weekend to process decision; three week on- site (in host country) orientation; periodic in-service sessions; three on-site retreats. Please contact Oscar Fuentes ( ofuentes@olanchoaid.org ) for more information LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers are provided housing in the Volunteer House, which is located a brief walk to the central square and is surrounded by several fruterias and supermercados. The home has 8 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, a living room, and a large outdoor space. Each volunteer will be given his or her own room with a shared bathroom. The house is fully furnished and contains necessary kitchen appliances and utensils. A water cooler for drinking water is provided. Other amenities include wireless internet, indoor plumbing, and electricity. Volunteers will be responsible for paying all water and electricity bills. Mission Teams stay in a separate home intended for larger groups. This home has seven rooms, each with 4-6 bunk beds. Bathrooms are communal. The home also contains a kitchen area to accommodate food preparation for large groups. Amenities include wireless internet, electricity, and indoor plumbing. SIZE OF PROGRAM: We welcome 2-8 new volunteers every four months and 10-12 mission groups each year. TRAINING: Volunteers are required to attend orientation before beginning service, in which they will learn about Foundation policies, cultural differences, safety precautions, school procedures, and curriculum requirements. Volunteers will be strongly supported throughout the academic year as various situations and challenges arise. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Operation TEACH participants are hired directly by a Baltimore area Catholic school, while living in community, engaging in spirituality, and earning a graduate degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University AREA OF SERVICE: Catholic Education LENGTH OF SERVICE: 2 years REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have the desire to teach, grow spiritually, and live in community with others. Participants must have an undergraduate degree in a teachable content area or education and a car. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Participants earn a yearly stipend of $13,700 paid directly from placement school, are provided health insurance, and live in subsidized community housing. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Program participants live in community housing provided by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Participants pay monthly rent and live in community with others. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Approximately 20 participants TRAINING: Operation TEACH participants earn a graduate degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University and receive ongoing support from program administration and placement schools.
