good health, Catholic commitment and willingness to work within the Church and with the Salesians of Don Bosco, college education or work experience, conversational knowledge of mission site language helpful, references, criminal background check, physical & psychological examination, motor vehicle driving record, phone interview, and mandatory 1-month orientation. Each candidate is required to attend one discernment weekend prior to receiving invitation to orientation. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room, board and medical insurance are provided. Travel expenses to and from the mission site are paid by lay missioner. Upon completion of commitment, the Salesian Lay Missioner Program will reimburse the SLM for his/her travel expenses to and from the mission site. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: In most cases, SLMs live in community with other volunteers and/or with the Religious Communities. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Approximately 20-25 Salesian Lay Missioners per year. TRAINING: Mandatory three week orientation before departure. Begins end of July. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Rolling application - deadline to have the application completed is May 1st. AFFILIATIONS: Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Roman Catholic GOAL OF PROGRAM: Salesian Lay Missioners (SLMs) work together with Salesian priests, brothers, and sisters to care for disadvantaged youth in developing countries. This is done through education, job training and constructive recreational activities. The goal is to have youngsters achieve intellectual, emotional, and spiritual maturity, thus becoming self-sufficient and contributing members of society with Christian values and good social skills. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Animal husbandry specialist, agronomist, arts and crafts instructor, carpenter, catechist, child care, coach, community organizer, computer operator, construction worker, craftsman, dentist, doctor, electrician, engineer, handyman, health care worker, Hispanic ministry, maintenance specialist, mechanic, nurse, nurse's aide, pastoral/parish ministry, plumber, printer, recreation specialist, social worker, teacher, youth minister. AREA OF SERVICE: Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, India, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, United States, Vietnam, Zambia.
