FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: We are able to provide full room and board, monthly stipend, local transportation and inclusion in community activities, as well as exposure to a wide variety of people and experiences. Spiritual direction, lessons in simple living, coming to an understanding of the root causes of poverty and social issues are other "added value" elements of our program. Volunteers provide transportation to their service site. If a volunteer needs health insurance, we can offer that. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live with sisters or associates in host communities sharing pleasant, simple living. We provide a nice balance of communal and alone time for our volunteers. Volunteers have a unique opportunity to live with our sisters, thereby benefitting from their life experiences and learned wisdom. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 3-10 volunteers TRAINING: Pre-placement program orientation is held in late July or early August at the School Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse in Milwaukee, WI. In special circumstances, we may consider a start date and orientation offering at a time outside of those offered. GOAL OF PROGRAM: Servant Year invites young adults to discern vocation while immersed in urban ministry. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Servant Year Members serve in the following areas or others as discerned during Orientation: Music Ministry Resident, Volunteer Coordinator, Case Manager, Co-Teacher at a Middle School, Volunteer Coordinator, After-school Program Director, Urban Garden Manager, Development Officer, Social Media and Communications Coordinator, Outreach coordinator. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers serve in youth centers, parish youth ministries, and high schools. AREA OF SERVICE: San Francisco, Richmond, Watsonville, Rosemead, Los Angeles and Bellflower in California; Laredo in Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Colima in Mexico. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Long-term: one year. Short-term: six months. Summer Experience: 7 weeks. REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must be between 18 and 35 years of age, high school graduates, Catholic or Christian, and single with no dependents. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Medical insurance, departure transportation, room and board are provided for the volunteers. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: The volunteers live in community with the Salesians.
