FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Interns receive housing, health insurance, loan deferral assistance, and transportation funds as part o f the internship program. As a community, the cohort of interns manages a shared budget that provides for food, personal and medical needs, and all supplies needed to maintain the household. Additionally, each intern receives a personal monthly stipend of $150. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: All interns live together in a shared home in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC. Sojourners was formed initially as an intentional community, with community members sharing vocation and personal life. The Sojourners Internship Program grows out of that foundational aspect of the organization, weaving together the threads of community life and the organization's work. Together, interns worship, share meals, manage a common budget, engage in weekly house meetings, maintain the household, pray, and learn to live as an ecumenical body of Christ living out peace and justice. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Each year, Sojourners accepts nine to 10 interns into our yearlong program. All interns live together and work together in Washington, DC. TRAINING: All interns receive a two-week orientation in Washington, DC, at the beginning of the program. The training covers all three tenets of the program, which are intentional community, personal faith, and professional vocation. Each intern will also receive ongoing office training specific to her/his department, as well a spiritual mentor. In addition to three retreats during the year, the program also includes weekly seminars on a variety of topics related to faith and justice, which can include book studies, site visits, or lectures led by visiting experts. We meet the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, health care. We help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment and counseling to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity one person at a time. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers may serve in the medical and dental clinic; as activity coordinators in our adult and family housing programs and in our day center for mentally ill adults. They may serve in our Dining Room for the Homeless and in our food pantry; help in our senior services programs; or serve in our administrative offices. AREA OF SERVICE: Washington, DC LENGTH OF SERVICE: Long-term: We prefer a year-long commitment, usually August to August. Check website for possible short-term placements. REQUIREMENTS: Open to single men and women at least 21 years of age. College graduates. No religious restrictions. Interview is required for long-term volunteers. There are additional options for local residents who wish to volunteer for a limited number of hours per week at one of our local ministry sites. REQUIREMENTS: Single, or married, 18 years or older. Volunteers must be willing and able to work with others, desire to live simply, be in good health, have a sense of commitment to service, be open to the CSJ Mission, be available for an interview. *To serve as a volunteer at our Brazil mission, the volunteer must speak fluent Portuguese. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: All volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the program site. Public transportation is encouraged and funds are provided during the volunteer experience unless for personal use. Volunteers receive room and board, plus a small monthly stipend, if their stay is beyond 3 months. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Live in community with CSJ vowed members, Agregees, or Associates. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Varies from one to several volunteers. It can depend on the place of ministry, time of year, and the needs of our ministries. TRAINING: Once an application and a background check have been completed, the volunteer will need to complete the Orientation to Mission-Vision of Sisters of Saint Joseph. The yearlong program combines full-time jobs in our office with an opportunity to live in an intentional Christian community. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Interns work full-time in the ministry of Sojourners. Each participant is placed in an entry-level position in one of our departments. These positions are desk jobs, with occasional opportunities for travel and/or meetings around the city for some positions. Tasks and duties are individualized to the work and placement, but most include a combination of administration, communication, organization, research, and writing. Half of the departmental positions have a concentration in non-profit management, while the other half are concentrated on program development. AREA OF SERVICE: All placements are in Washington, DC. LENGTH OF SERVICE: All placements are 12 months, from August to August. REQUIREMENTS: Any and everything! Anyone 21 years and older with a US Social Security number, without dependents, is eligible to apply for the Sojourners Internship Program.
