UCCE—University Consortium for Catholic Education 312-915-7049 lhubbel@luc.edu w ucceconnect.com CONTACT: Lee Hubbell, Chair AFFILIATIONS: Catholic GOAL OF PROGRAM: The UCCE is a collaborative effort within higher education to strengthen and sustain K-12 Catholic/Parochial education. The consortium programs are housed at primarily Catholic colleges and universities, and are designed as graduate level teaching service programs. All UCCE programs share the common pillars of Spirituality, Community, and Professional Development, and all offer the opportunity to earn a Master's degree while pursuing a vocation in Catholic education. Programs differ in the types of degrees offered, duration of program, candidate eligibility, area of service, and religious affiliation. Consortiummembers include: ACT, ACE, ACESJU, Billiken Teacher Corps, ExCEL, Lalanne, LANCE, LU-CHOICE, Magis, Operation TEACH, PACE, PACT, PLACE Corps, UCTC. Visit our website for links to the individual program websites. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: UCCE teaching placements are in participating Catholic/Parochial schools. Under-resourced schools interested in the UCCE mission are given preference. School sites are chosen in concert with the local dioceses. Placements vary widely, including suburban, inner-city, rural and Native American reservation schools. AREA OF SERVICE: UCCE member programs serve coast to coast in over 65 dioceses in the United States. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Two years to 27 months. Program dependent. REQUIREMENTS: Minimally, a Bachelor's degree, an interest in Catholic education, a commitment to service, and a desire to live in community. Program dependent. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Tuition subsidized, housing, stipend, medical insurance, student loan deferment available; some programs participate in AmeriCorps education awards (when available). LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Generally, teachers live in intentional communities. Housing is arranged by each program and may include single family residences, apartments, and former convent or rectory buildings. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Varies widely-see each program TRAINING: Volunteers are enrolled in graduate coursework for the duration of their service. Degrees offered include M.Ed., M.A., M.S., and M.A.T. Summer coursework may begin as early as May or as late as mid-June. Program dependent. Semi-annual retreats, conferences, program activities and meetings run throughout the programs and are designed to support and encourage community and spiritual growth. GOAL OF PROGRAM: "Urban Servant Corps is a faith-based, intentional community of full-time volunteers who seek to live simply while serving and accompanying those most in need at non-profit partner agencies in the heart of Denver." USC volunteers commit to engaging with values of intentional community, service, simplicity and spirituality. During a year of service, members also benefit from professional development, vocational discernment, and leadership opportunities. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Urban Servant Corps volunteers are placed at a variety of non-profit organizations in the Denver community. These organizations address basic human concerns of low-income and at-risk populations and provide immediate, direct service as well as lasting solutions and long-term social change. USC's partner non- profit organizations provide a wide range of experience for volunteers that suit individual interests: people who are homeless, youth/young adults, women and children, education programs, job training, food and nutrition, health care, housing services, basic needs, etc. AREA OF SERVICE: Central Denver LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year, late-August to mid-August of the following year. REQUIREMENTS: A commitment to service, a desire to live in intentional community, 21 years of age or older (no upper limit!), Bachelor of Arts degree (or equivalent). FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Food, housing, health insurance, monthly stipend ($75), professional growth and development fund ($300), transportation to and from work (if site is more than 2 miles away). LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: There are private bedrooms for each volunteer in a large community house; common spaces are shared. Community decisions are made by consensus. There are regularly schedule "intentional community" times and all are asked to participate. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 18 full-time volunteers TRAINING: One week orientation to community life and to the city of Denver. Retreats and workshops throughout the year. On-site job training is provided to each volunteer by their placement non-profit. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Application priority deadline is March 1.
