Shaney Fink begins herfirstyear as USD's Academic Support Coordinator. She takes over for Mike Matoso, who moves into the newly created position of Compliance Coor– dinator. This past year she was on the Torero vo ll eyball coaching staff as a first year assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and second round finish in the NCAA Tourna– ment. Prior to USD she gained coaching experience at the high school, col lege and international levels for four years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career ( 1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-Pac 10 Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A., graduating with honors in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994.

The purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this chal– lenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The academic support program is designed to assist students in adjust– ing to life at USD and developing sound academic and career plans. By pro– moting a philosophy of individual re– sponsibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educa– tional experience, the academic sup– port program assists each athlete to realize their full potential. ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAM The USD Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to assist and motivate student-athletes in their journey and progress towards their academic goals, and ultimately graduation. The primary objective is to improve the student– athletes' study skills, support them in their academic work, and encourage scholastic achievement. It is essential that student-athletes receive the necessary academic assistance to continue normal progress toward a degree whi le participat– ing in ath letics. USD student-ath letes receive assistance through advising, progress re– ports, academic tutors, campus learning centers, such as the Logic, Math, and Writing Centers, and the Accelerated Study Program. The Accelerated Study Program provides a monitored, quiet area open only to the student-athletes to ensure quality study time. These services are available to all USD student-athletes.
