CONSERVACIÓN PATAGÓNICA

The Bottom Line, Upfront We forever aim to walk the talk, to be responsible and astute citizens of the world. We are inveterate supporters of local and international projects and organizations that help environmental, educational, and health initiatives in the countries we visit. And, closer to home, we’re proud to be a San Francisco–certified Green Business and to have our offices located in the Tides Converge nonprofit center, which represents the cutting edge in sustainable architecture, recycling, energy conservation, volunteer- ing, and public transportation. The GeoEx team works to reduce the amount of unwanted and undelivered mail, and whenever possible, we print with soy inks and UV coatings on tree-free paper or high-quality recycled stock supplied by companies certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. You expect this of us, and we expect it of ourselves. And the Details GeoEx works diligently with NGOs and our representa- tives in the field to develop and share practices that mini- mize our footprint and generate meaningful contributions to local economies. We’re mindful that other countries and cultures may have different perspectives from ours, and taking those into careful consideration, we work with local communities in developing appropriate itineraries and routes; in selecting responsible hotels, boats, and other transportation; in choosing informed local guides; Responsible Travel

in educating our travelers about local conditions and customs; and in adhering to minimum-impact practices. We’re the first to acknowledge that bringing travelers to remote and not-so-remote places inevitably leaves local and global environmental and cultural footprints. But—and this is something to which we devote continual thought—we believe fervently that our trips provide meaningful and important ways for local communities and governments to create sustainable forms of development, which in turn relieve pressure on resources and expand the perspectives of our travelers. Our 38 years of experience have taught us that, when it’s intelligently done, travel is a net plus for the visitor and the visited alike. ABOVE  Chacabuco Valley, Chile. Kris Tompkins, founder of Conservación Patagónica, says the Chacabuco “has every original species, every ecotype. It’s a conservation bridge between the steppe and the Andes. It’s a museum of Patagonia.”  BELOW  Kids in Cambodia supported by Room to Read, an organization that works to improve literacy and gender equality in education.
